If I could find Win 10 for $0 I would gladly take it, until then I’ve procured it other manners. I have a Win 7 Enterprise key, could I install that and then upgrade for free?

Unfortunately that ship sailed. You could have used the asistive technology loophole to upgrade but that ended 12/31.

Win 10 is your best bet as MS has not been too quick (if at all) to support the newer Intel and AMD processors on Win 7.
 
I would preview various versions of linux and see if you like it; good for basic email, youtoobing and surfing.

No one I have introduced to linux has ever returned to Windows

The maintainability of the OS is streamlined if you use something like LinuxMint or Ubuntu; all the security updates for OS and applications are applied from the same repository; no separate software updates for various applications....
