How to determine if purolator or champion makes motorcraft filters?

Reading the FL-910-s thread makes me real nervous now. I stock a ton of FL-820s, FL-500, and FL-910s and was curious how to tell if they are good or bad?

Do you know what the FL-910 crosses over to on Purolator? If you know the Purolator number search it here on BITOG to see if it's been cut open yet to check pic similarities.

There are a few threads in this forum discussing the new line of Motorcraft oil filters what look to be made by Champion Labs. There is a PDF showing the construction. Some have fiber end caps, and eCore center tube. Some retain the metal end caps and center tube. None have a base end bypass valve anymore - guess Ford isn't concerned about bypass valve location anymore. They have different Ford part numbers than the Purolator made Motorcrafts.

Search this forum for Motorcraft and you'll probably find the threads.

Here's an old thread about the Motorcraft oil filter changes and showing the new model line cross-over info. Download the PDF in that thread and you'll see all the technical info.

So will FL-820s , FL-500, and FL-910s be discontinued. Very confused.

I have to unfortunatly buy from walmart as my ford dealers are full MSRP + 15% over. So I refuse to buy from them.

Not sure the original Purolator made Motorcrafts will be disconnected. I called my local Ford dealer parts dept, and the guy didn't even know about the alternative Motorcraft filters. Thought that was strange.

Didnt even know of the alternative filters?............Sadly i find this everywhere. Medical field, retail, wholesale, utility companies, and contractors. Really sad.

They popped up in the parts catalog for a while then a few months ago went away. We only carried the alternate number for the FL-910s and I am currently handing those out for shop oil changed to get rid of them.

Unfortunately that's the current business model...no interest in hiring/training specialists, experts, or even somoene with half a brain. Clueless grunts are much cheaper and good 'nuff most of the time, appeasing the investors and allowing administrators to get extra bonuses/vacations.

Did that sound snarky???

The FOMOCO filters that come from the ford factory are different than the actual motorcraft filters we stocked at dealership. Those are made by purolator. The filters that are put on at the plant are made by champion labs, they say on the filter FOMOCO.

Serious question: Does it matter?
You see so many threads on BITOG about "Who makes such and such a filter?" "Who makes such and such an oil?"
In this example, doesn't Ford have their specifications of how they want the filter made, and then someone makes it the way they want? It's not like they call Purolator and say "Hey, can you make us an oil filter? Just make it however you want."
If they have Fram or Purolator or whoever make it, they make it to the Ford specifications, right?
If Fram wants oil made to sell at AAP, they have someone make it to their specifications, not just whatever the company wants to put in the jug, correct?

I've seen factory installed oil filters on Fords also made by WIX at some point. Think they change suppliers now and then.
