How much over the speed limit is too much?

You know what's even more disrespectful than tailgating? Driving slow in the left lane.

In the twisted minds of today's drivers, your comment doesn't surprise me. What surprises me is the hypocrisy. Most of today's drivers are perfectly fine with speeding and tailgating, but they want other drivers to abide by the law when it comes to staying out of the left lane...in other words, they only support people obeying the driving laws that suit them...

If traffic is relatively light and I come up on someone in the left lane driving slower than me, I will follow for awhile, and not tailgating like an agressive maniac. If they don't move over when they can, then I will pass on the right. Of course if traffic is heavy, there's no use trying to drive aggressively because you'll really not get anywhere any faster to make a difference.

And yeah, tailgating is not "respectful", but just something that is dangerous and induces road rage.

Amen!

It's a car-body-language way of saying, psst, your turn, move over.

If I'm 3rd in line, I give the guy 2nd in line plenty of space for safety, as he's the one handling the thankless task of tailgating the wrong-lane-offender.

Is it aggressive to wish someone would get out of the way so they can just get out of the way? It's not really any of your business (unless you're a cop) why the person who wants to pass, wants to pass.

Wishing is not aggressive. The act of tailgating is...it's also illegal, but that doesn't matter to those who do both speeding and tailgating...they only care about the laws that are convenient for them...

But you are telling us all that you consider driving 5MPH over the legal (that's the LAW) speed limit suits your personal preference, and want everyone else to debate their personal line in the sand with you.

You break the law...you consider it acceptable...you "wish" that the law only applied to people who don't have your same belief system, as you feel that you are entirely justified in your own illegal actions.

I have a standard solution to this issue … always put over sized tires on my truck and then drive the speed limit !

Radar guns don't care what size your tires are or what your speedometer says because the gear ratio is now changed...

As usual you twist what I said around so you can start an argument with me like you always do. What I said is I typically drive 5 over the limit and I do it in an attempt to go with the flow of traffic. Obviously, if I drove the speed limit, considering that everyone speeds these days, I would constantly be in the way no matter what lane I was in, and would probably eventually be run off the road. I think most people would think my position is a rational one. What I don't consider rational are those who drive 20 MPH faster than traffic flow and tailgate drivers who are in their way....

Do you really think anyone on this website would need that explanation ?

We already know the answer in Grampi land.
Anyone driving faster than you is driving too fast while anyone driving more slowly than you id impeding traffic.
I no longer even try to drive fast in Ohio since its an exercise is futility.
I just set the cruise on 75 mph or so and enjoy the ride.
If Grampi and his ilk think I'm going too fast and block the left lane, I may just take them on the right or I may give them a couple of high beam flashes or maybe even a couple of horn toots if they seem too determined to continue their passive-aggressive behavior.
The other side of the coin is that if some guy in a big Audi or Benz or a clapped out Toyota thinks that they need to go faster, then I'll hasten to get out of their way.
UNLESS they tailgate me aggressively, in which case I'll leave them sitting alongside that truck drifting around because the driver is dog tired for a long time.

No, but i think you just enjoy blocking the left lane. The tailgaters are control freaks and so are the left lane blockers. The left land blockers enjoy the control that they miss in other parts of their lives.

A guy at work told me if someone tailgates him in the left lane he will drive half way into the solder and throw massive shoulder debris all over the car behind him ... driving is all about the rage anymore.

I can't believe how many of you apparently can't read. As I have said many times, I DON'T PARK IN THE LEFT LANE. The only time I drive in the left lane is to pass, then I move right. If someone tailgates me while I'm passing, then they'll just have to wait until I'm done passing...

even if it takes all night...which is why they flash you...
You've already said in previous threads that you will do exactly that if you consider it impatient.

What are you talking about now?

It doesn't work with me. I never drive faster due to a tailgater. If anything I slow down...

You say you don't block the left lane. Yet you have more threads on this site than anyone i've noticed, about being tailgated esp in the left lane. While you think you not blocking the left lane perhaps you are not self aware. I don't care for tailgating either, don't condone it. On occasion it happens to me, but as often as you complain about it, maybe you are the problem and don't realize it.

The Richardson / Plano border area of the Dallas metroplex is a pretty inconsistent area, speed limit wise. The same types of roads, traveling the same direction, with the same number of lanes will vary in speed limits, which to me says that they're either purposeful speed traps, or Richardson just likes things slow.

Renner Road, between Murphy Road and Central Expressway, is a 40 mph road, actively patrolled. Some portions of that road are literally never-land. No houses, no businesses...just a huge creek bed and trees. It's pretty clear that politics played a bigger part in determining the speed limit on that road than any scientific equations did. I regularly find myself in a group of drivers in the mornings traveling that the sparsely populated portions of that road at 60 mph....until we encounter a row of law-abiding Corollas and Camrys, which is frequent. That left-most of three lanes seems to attract them.

The next road to the north (Plano Parkway) is 45mph. 55 seems to be the universal speed there, until, again, we come up behind the Toyotas.

It appears Richardson's efforts to keep the speeds down has had the opposite effect, as people more frequently exceed it by a wider margin than they do in Plano. When you go ridiculously low, you just fuels the fire, it seems.

I find it best to find a pack of reasonable speeders (5-10 over) and stay in the middle. The second you get brave and jet ahead, you'll be the first one to hit the laser beam, and nobody wants that.

I'm the problem because I don't drive like a maniac? Again, for the billionth time, I only drive in the left lane long enough to pass, then I move right. If that forces someone to slow down to only 5 or 10 MPH over the limit until I finish my pass and move right, I don't see how that makes me the problem....

Unless it takes you 10-20 miles to pass! If you pass in a 1/2 or 3/4 mile or so and move over, no problem.( i do it in less for a single car) You should not be tailgated. But as often as you post about it, either you have a problem passing, or you just have a problem.
