I like Platinum but i buy it when the price is rite only... As for the ultra i think that is too expensive... I see engines coming in here for rebuilds all day long and it is almost never an oil related problem due to a specific oil...If the oil says sm or sn that is good enough to make your engine outlast the rest of the car in most cases....
We use drums of conoco 5w20 5w30 10w30 in our shop and never had a problem, that is a good oil for the price and i use that in most of my cars also with no problems..
I never buy oil unless the deal is great..

Pretty much. I buy whichever high mileage oil is the cheapest. Lately seems like Pennzoil HM is consistently cheap.

Me too. I would stock up on syn if the price is $2 or less per quart, I also stock up on dino if the price is less than $1/qt. Specially when there was FAR Peak oil and Proline filter from Pep Boys a coupe years ago.

I do except I'm limiting myself to synthetic oils. It's perhaps not necessary but I don't think the extra cost is significant even at regular retail prices eg $20 for PP vs $12 for PYB or $11 for MC Blend. So say $10 to $20 extra per year per car to know that I'm putting in the absolute best.

It's also good that there was a Synpower deal for $1 a quart and I got enough of it for a year and a half. There's sure to be synthetic deals during that time for me to stock up again.

the #1 reason i buy my own oil is because i know where it's coming from. sorry to say this but i dont trust anyone to change my oil when it comes from a drum.

what does that mean? oil in that drum can be used oil for all we know.

so yes...price and "peace of mind" are the 2 main reasons i buy my own oil.

I don't think a shop is going to rip me off over a few dollars worth of oil on their bulk $19.95 oil change. Similarly I doubt the local wholesaler even carries non-rated oil like ND30.

The real fear I have is them sabotaging something else, diassembling my airbox/PCV poorly, wrecking my undercarriage with their lift, etc.

(raises hand.)

My price point is beating supertech, currently $2/qt. Current default is havoline for $4.95/gal from AA last summer, there's a "pallet" in the rafters of my garage.

I always look for the best price on the oil i run but don't buy just on price point. If i can change the oil and filter (6-8qt) for $50-60 i'm happy.

I've reduced my stash now to a 1 year supply of oil for each of my vehicles. That allows me to wait for deals on my favorite oil/oils. Lately those deals have been coming in the form of an OC special at AAP. I've stock piled oil decades before joining Bitog, and have never paid full price for a qt of oil.

For a friend's car I take care of I pick up whatever 5w30 synthetic or synthetic blend is cheapest. It gets run 5k either way. Usually it ends up being Syntec, PP, and very occasionally Synpower from AAP.

I, on the other hand, just pick up whatever HDEO is on sale at my local AAP. They're always running a sale on Rotella, Delo, Delvac, Tection, etc. During the winter I just run Rotella T6.

Funny thing is when I was using Mobil 1 oil and filters, each oil change for my car was right around ~$55. Then I switched to PP and OEM filters and the cost went down to ~$40. Then I switched to Rotella T6 and the cost went down to ~35. Now when I'm running dino HDEO in the summer the cost is down to $15 per change.

Me. I could care less of the brand as long as its at a low price.

My best one day score was approx 90 quarts of closeout oil at 59 cents each.

You have the same thought that I do.
I buy syns at qt, and dinos at qt.
I have often been able to get great deals on PP after MIR, or on clearance.
An exception is the GC I use in the Subaru.
Even there, you can get oil change specials from AA and PB to bring the price down to a reasonable level.
I may swich the Subaru to either M1 TDT or T6, since there are deals to be had on both that are better than those available for GC.

"Lowest price wins" is how I buy my oil.

Best I ever did was closeout Autozone Exxon Superflo for $4.99/jug, and 99c/qt. I cleaned out 3 stores of all of it but 20w50. Wish I still had some left, great oil, great price.

If you're going to change it at 3k anyway, then it doesn't matter. However, I wouldn't run ACCEL in anything.

There have been times when money was tight or I was feeling cheap and used SuperTech in my car(s) on occasion. Nothing bad happened and they still run fine.

In the summer everything usually gets Rotella T and T6 in the winter, although there are execptions to this rule (experimentation).

I'm right with you on that one.

My thought is that the major brands with a reputation to keep will make sure that the add packs and quality is good, and since there are a number of lines that don't advertise much they can afford to offer a lower price.

I tend to buy on price but not sale price. I dislike constantly shifting brand in the same car. It likely doesnt matter as many high mileage cars (Like the 700,000 mile 1992 5.0 Mustang) just run whatever is on sale but we all have our hangups.

I tend to choose what I think is the best bang for the buck at non-sale prices. Currently that Motorcraft Synthetic Blend and Pennzoil Platinum for me.

Ive been in the situation of needing to change oil in a Pinch sometimes, however i always topped off and/or shortened the OCI with my Preferred Oil if i had to do it that way.

I believe that if you spend a little more on the Oil, its better for your Engine.

Most Oil nowadays is fine.

As well, i checked my Owner's Manual on my Vehicle, just for what it said on the Oil Change matter... and it said 6000 Miles! Wasnt expecting that.

I base my Oil on the season, not Price.
