how many miles on your euro-sled

I've owned a few MB diesels with >>200k. My current highest mileage are my 91 BMW and my 82 MB both of which have 160k or so. Low miles for the age I guess.

this is what i want to hear! i'm just turning over 70k on my current 328i, and hope to keep it moving for well into the 300k realm. lots of commuting miles going on it. hopefully a bullet-proof inline 6.

86K miles on my 530i. Not sure what it had for the first 30K miles of its life, but probably dealer-provided Castrol 5w30. After that, I ran either GC or PU 5w-40 in it. I just posted some pictures of it in the Photo subforum.

The C300 has about 56K miles on it, running M1 0w-40 typically. Sometimes if the service is done at the dealer, I think they use M1 5w-40 Formula M though.

IMO, engine lubrication issues are typically not what brings these cars down (presuming the right oil was used and changed on time). It's typically some other issue that makes the car not worth keeping... cooling system stuff, auto trans, electrical system, etc...

My first 528e , Bought with 150k miles on it. I drove it for 12+ yrs and never had a breakdown. I also maintained it in my driveway with basic hand tools. E 28 BMWs built a reputation that BMW has traded on for 25 yrs. The newer models are very fragile and costly to maintain. I wouldn't own A BMW made after 1995.

From my Sig, the Euro sleds...

92 300E 5W40 Syntec 130,000
02 Volvo V70 T5 5W40 M1 149,000
02 Volvo V70 XC 5W30 PU 173,000
05 MB S600 M1 0W40 71,000

I really don't consider any of them to be "high mileage"...

My signiture old BMW is now just past 142K.
Nextgen Maxlife 10W-40 has proven to be the perfect oil for it.
Good fuel economy, low consumption and drastically less leakage.
Also, I posted a really good UOA of 4K on this oil last summer.
I've had a couple of Benz diesels, one of which we kept past 200K.
As long as a thick enough grade is used, most of the old German engines seem pretty unfussy about oil.

My mom's old 240 wagon had the odo stop somewhere in the mid 250k range - kept driving it for years (soccer games, beach and all) and it must have had 350k easily. More of a brick, than a sled.
My favorite repair was the mech fixing a vac leak with a nickel and RTV - repair lasted the life of the car.

2003 Audi A6 2.7t 155k miles - first owner serviced it at the dealer with Castrol 5W-40 up to ~60k miles.

From then, I would use M1 0W-40 up until about 130k and then I found this place and have been using whatever I can find cheap. One run of FAR G-Oil, one run of FAR G-Oil and a quart of RL, one run of $1/quart QSUD and a quart of RL, and now Belgian Castrol.

Everything is original including the two turbos. Had the car chipped at 140k to up the boost to 16psi from 9psi, and now it drives like it should have from the factory.

Nice.

I've got 122,000 on my 1.8T A4 Quattro. I currently use M1 0W-40, 5000 mi OCI.

Are you still running on the original turbo?

circa '07 I purchased a 1989 Lancia Thema 16V turbo that had done 350,000km. I believe it was the fastest FWD sedan to come out of Europe at the time. It had low compression on one cylinder. I opened it up, found a chipped ex valve. Fitted a new valve and it ran like a gem after that. It had a tonne of grunt. Factory rated 185hp, and it made 172hp at the wheels on the dyno. Spec for 15w40, it probably never saw anything better than 10w40 blend. I ran nothing but Elf 15w40 SM/CF PCMO in it at 5000km OCI.

Very cool!

As far as powerful FWD euro sedans of that era, I think there was also an Audi 200 with a 2.2 I5 turbo engine that was rated at around 190 hp, alas, I don't know if it was available with FWD or AWD only.

Well, wiki lists two of them:

Quote:

2.2 L I-5, 200 PS (147 kW; 197 hp), fuel injection, turbo (1988−1990); 190 PS (140 kW; 190 hp) with automatic transmission
2.2 L I-5, 220 PS (162 kW; 217 hp), 20-valve turbo for 200 Quattro 20V (1989−1991)

I thought the first one may have been FWD.
