High Mileage vs HDEOs

Nickdfresh,
The short answer is yes. (given the context of an older cheap car) Mixing brands is to be avoided if possible, of course. I don't see a problem with mixing weights from the same brand.

BrianWS,
Interesting, that is quite a VIS drop!?!? I am inclined to stick to an effective 30+ weight and move up to 40 only if consumption is significant. Will see.

Nick, 5W30 or 40 are both recommended grades for my car. I'm trying to stick w/ 40 weight if possible (even though I am running 5W30 PP at the moment) b/c the oil pumps tend to wear quickly on the newer saabs (99-02 9-3 and 98-05 9-5). I figured maybe the thicker oil would keep the pressure up.

I looked at Rotella 5W40 but at less than $4 a qt it didn't seem like that much better of deal than Mobil 1 T&S 5W40 at $4 a qt (which is hard to find these at Walmart). Ford has a Motorcraft 10W30 HDEO, evidently designed for the newer Powerstroke, and it's about $2.50 a qt. My local dealer sent his stock back to the warehouse as no one uses it, instead almost all use 15W40 in their diesels.

I'm currently using Mobil 1 T&S in both Taurus sedans, the lawnmower, and as a 33% blend with Delvac 15W40 in the truck. The older Tarus needs it to keep oil consumption down, and I just decided to start using it in the other newer car instead of stocking another oil. The Mobil 1 0W40 would probably work well in either car, the mower too, the 10W30 HDEO might too, but the 0W40 would probably do better starting in colder and running in hotter weather.
