Hi,

Recently I'm planning to drain the OE coolant and fill the new aftermarket coolant to my Volvo.

But as far as I know, some kind of coolant are not recommended to mix each other.
So I want some advice from you guys.

All info I know regarding Volvo OE antifreeze is that it's EG type and its color is Green.

So here are my questions.
a) What type is the Volvo OE coolant? (a type such as HOAT, OAT...)
b) What kind of aftermarket coolant can I mix with? (I mean one with a better cooling capability)
c) Plz recommend any coolant additives safe for Volvo OE coolant or mixed coolant like question b. (Currently I have some Redline Water Wetter.)

Here's for the reference photo of OE Coolant.

Thanks guys.

You didn't say what year and model Volvo, and if the coolant is the original factory fill. You should use the OE coolant especially if you're just draining the radiator and not completely flushing all the coolant out.

The volvo coolant is probably a HOAT. If it's green it might be an older formula similar to G-05, but the newer Volvo coolant is I think blue and is basically silicated Dexcool.

Ooops.

Mine is S60R (2007).
and the color looks like deep green for me hmmm...

OE volvo coolant is (HOAT) look for Pentofrost NF its comparable to OE coolant and avalable through most NAPA. I will still opt for the Amsoil AF myself though.

I think the approved coolant is G48, which is a SiOAT somewhat like G-05 and somewhat like Dexcool but with silicates. Probably either one would work with a complete changover, but the OE coolant would be the best choice.

Volvo designed a special cooling system for nearly all their engines, even though their main blocks are off the shelf units. The coolant is a special mix that was designed to match the Volvo system, so it's one good idea to use the Volvo coolant and not try and find an equivalent, because it's real good stuff. I drained mine after 5 years and it was spotless with not a trace of rust or contamination, so the anti corrosives and sealers in it work real well.
Ask the dealer about any approved coolant additives, but I kind of think he might point at your owners manual which says none are required.

A picture of the back of the container might help, particularly if it mentions what inhibitors it contains.

If you search through the archives, I think you will find posts from people who have substituted G05 for Volvo OEM.

Did you just recently get that container? I got 2 gallons for my S60R and it was a white bottle with blue label. Maybe old stock? Mine was greenish blue.

Thank you all.
So the OE seems to be the best.

But regarding the additives,
by searching the forum a bit,
it seems to be that RP purple ice is relatively better than Redline WW.(found some threads that WW creates black clots due to its ingredients.)

So before jumping into the final decision,
I got it that the OE coolant is HOAT and it's a good stuff.
And the additives are not so sure.

What do you guys think?
If I narrow down my choice with RP Purple Ice and redline WW.

Thanks!

I use the amsoil coolant boost with the OE volvo coolant, had it in for over a year good results no issues. I had problems using WW in the hyundai (brown sludge in overflow & radiator cap) I won't use again.Purple ice I can't comment on never used it before. I will be changing the coolant in the C30 in spring over to Amsoil AF with coolant boost.
