Hello all,

Spring's approaching! I'm about to get me oil changed soon. But pretty hesitate~

I have my Audi/VW 2.0TFSI engine burns about 1qt of oil every 1500miles. It currently running on M1 5w30 (accidentally) which is not approved by VW spec

Thinking about that rate of consumption, I'm looking at Maxlife 10w40 which is proven to be good at treating this issue. But I'm also concerning about the turbo-charged engine since Maxlife is not full syn oil and i do have some short trips (but not in cold weather). Could M1 0w40 be a better choice? Another option would be the dealer's OE Castrol 5w40 in gold bottle, which is not a popular oil here but relatively cheap with their ongoing special ($19 for 5qt). Is that a good deal/value

So, I'm think about filling Maxlife 10w40, M1 0w40 or dealer's Castrol 5w40. Which one is the best for me? Or better ones? Any advice would help~

Also need a bit help with the filter, MANN filter (OE) i can get here for $14, worth it? Or any better choice?

Thanks

thanks I too prefer M1 a bit.
But what is castrol 5w40 on earth? I never seen it anywhere other than dealer's counter.

The one your referring to is probably made in Germany. No doubt its good stuff. maybe a more experienced member can help us out?

The Castrol at 19 bucks for 5 quarts is a decent price for good synthetic oil and it meets vw specs. My daughter had a 1.8 turbo beetle for many years and I usually ran Castrol full synthetic 5w30 in it and the motor outlasted the transmission and was running fine when I traded it. I used 5000 mile OCI to minimize possible sludging

I have some Castrol Syntec 5w50 I could sell you for like $3/qt plus shipping if you're interested. That will keep you from leaking.

Any VW 502/505 oil would be fine: Mobil 1 0w40, Castrol Edge 0w30, Castrol Edge 5w40, or Valvoline SynPower 5w40. I'd get whichever is on sale. All are available from most auto parts stores.

How many quarts you got?

PP 5w20 may not be enough even HM oil.

I'm running 5w30 i can definitely hear the valve noise only after warmed up.

More exactly, the castrol i mentioned is Castrol Edge Professional OE 5W40.

not sure if this is what you're saying.

As I am new to my VW GTI which has the 2.0 TSI motor, I have read negative things about M1 0w40 for this particular engine. Do some net searching you can find the reads yourself. The UOA's with this particular motor with M1 0w40 are not the greatest. If you stick to a 5k mile OCI then you will be ok. You are using oil because Turbo cars have a tendacy to shear oils and that 30w Mobil probably turned into a 20w and slipped by the pistons. I believe that is VW/Audi spec a 40w to prevent this from happening. Its just my 10 cents. From the research I have done thus far, its a guessing game. What I can tell you is stick with a 40w something. This gives you a "Shear Cushion" to prevent oil loss. Brand choice is all up in the air. I would think twice about the M1 though, regretably. Seems the TSI motor doesn't like M1 0w40.

If I am not mistaken its not called Edge Professional, its called Syntec OE and can be had on Amazon even though its dealer only issue. My questions is, how different is that vs. Syntec Edge 5w40 we can buy anywhere?

It is actually Edge Professional OE, like this:

Theres a couple of legthy threads on the castrol 5w40 and 0/40 in the euro section. Give em a read if you have not already. It might help in your decision

The two liter turbo is VW's premier sludge maker, from what I've read.
M1 0W-40 is probably the best choice, although there are other choices.
The dealer Castrol 5W-40 would probably be fine as well.
I like Maxlife 10W-40, but maybe not in this application.
Any API synthetic 5w30 is probably okay for shorter drains in cooler weather if the car is not run hard.
There were some posts here by Audi Junkie of UOAs of various VAG turbos run on API spec synthetic oils and the results were pretty good on not overly long drains.
Were it my VW two liter turbo, I'd probably feed it M1 0W-40 and maybe shorten the drain intervals from what VW allows.
Use the OEM oil filter or something as good, not something priced cheap because it's made cheap.
The rate of oil consumption you're seeing is not a plus but will allow you to extend drains to the length VW recomends.
10K or so?
Many VWs do consume some oil from new, so while I wouldn't like adding a quart of pretty expensive oil every 1.5K or so, you do have to pay to play.
Enjoy the car, since it is a nice one.

i did read a lot actually.
But i'm not talking about that Castrol 5w40 in black bottle. instead, is the dealer's EDGE Professional OE in gold...

thanks. i do enjoy my car. that's why i wanna take good care of it~

i too think M1 is good clear. But just concerning if it will still make the engine noisy even with 0w40. I'm currently running 5w30 and the car sounds like a diesel truck at hot idle. Since ppl here said the dealer's oe castrol is not bad, I may probably end up with it for the bang for $.

The 5w30 is considerably thinner (about 20-25%) than the 0w40...so yes, it could definitely change the sound.
