I just picked up my 2005 Subaru WRX and I want to change the oil ASAP. I've done lots of reading over the last few days about various oils, and I've learned a lot, but I'm still indecisive.

I'm going to use the car as a daily driver about 400 miles a week and plan to do some "spirited" driving.

A few people on the Subaru forums had recommended Mobil 1 5W-40 Turbo Diesel Truck. This oil is readily available at the local Wal-Mart, but is it ok to use in a gasoline engine?

I really need some guidance. Thanks in advance!

Doesnt Subaru recommend a 5-30 for that motor? Most of the import guys down here who drive those things all run Red Line 30's or Royal Purple 30's that I know of?

First off let me start by saying, nice choice! That year is one my favorite years of the WRX. Can't stand the 06+ redesigned grill. I'm not too familiar with the oil grades Subaru uses, but best of luck to you!

5w30 is "recommended" for the 2005 WRX (as well as my 2005 WRX STi), but you can use other weights as well:

I'd start with something a bit thinner than the M1 5W-40. Either M1 0W-40 or GC 0W-30 (which I use in my STi) would be good places to start.

to BITOG!

I was able to find one place around me that stocks the GC 0W-30, labeled as "european formula". I just dont know how much longer they will be carrying it. The Mobil 1 products are all easily available as well as the Pennoil.

low mileage and spirited driving...

if the times you drive it normally you [get to full operating temp and stay there for at least 10 mins], i would go with Redline 5W30 or a 50/50 mix of Redline and German Castrol.

if you dont let it warm up completely i would do Shell Rotella synthetic 5W40 or an Amsoil oil that meets ACEA A3/B3 specs.
