Hello from China

I highly doubt that he had bought it here - they usually don't sell them in stores. There are quite a few Western foods in local supermarkets and Walmart but Vegemite would be something with a very limited appeal to an average consumer.

I can't get over the fact that the crappiest items in China are found in Walmart. The electronics they sell are the [censored] ones they sell in the US and everything else is low quality as well except for the brand name items. But the food area is quite diverse - live fish in tanks, wide variety of stuff in the deli area, veggies and stuff. It's packed so I guess they sell OK stuff. Wanted to buy some good tea but the attendant said they did not carry such things. You get some tea that are leaves but mostly it's tea bags. Lipton has the widest variety of tea bags. there are some instant teas as well. Surprisingly, the Walmart brand instant teas are good. No artificial ingredients as I expected.

Have some baozi!

Is Baozi the Chinese street food that's made from Fram cardboard endcaps?

I've lived in Germany twice, Korea, Panama and have spent time in dozens of other countries. While I did try to get into the culture of the places I lived, some of the food in some places was a little difficult to stomach. Korea was the most difficult for me...I used to go out with Korean officers and their families and hit the Soju first just because I knew it was going to be rough for me to throw down some of their interesting fare.

But in Germany, there was nothing better than a Bratwurst w/brochen and pommes frites after a night of pints.

I'm sure if I went to China and had a few drinks, I'd be tempted to try some of those yummy cardboard, fat-enhanced dumplings that people have been raving about lately.

I'm back home. The trip was nice and certainly opened my eyes about China. It's an amazing place where 21-st century technologies meet with 19-th century ones. On one hand you have advertisements playing on the subway walls while you ride, and the other hand you have bicycle rickshaws. Every public bus has at least 3 flat screen TV-s while our UA plane had some 12" CRT-s.
