I know Havoline dino is a favorite among folks on this site... but is anyone using Havoline synthetic? It's priced a bit cheaper than some of the other synthetics discussed here. Just curious?

Also, I believe their 5w40 is A3 rated and is supposed to be available in the states, but I haven't seen it anywhere. Anyone know where this oil can be found?

I'm using Havoline synthetic 5w30 in my wife's Expedition. It seems to like it just fine.

If you want the 5w40, find a Texaco Xpress Lube. They will sell it to you by the qt., but you'll pay a premium for it.

Wondering where the fanfare is for this product? Does it not stand up to the competition like Havoline dino oil does? Are Mobil 1 and the others (Castrol, etc.) considered to be better?

Havoline Synthetic is a cheaper Group III base. Amsoil, Royao Purple, Mobil 1 use more expensive PAO and RedLine uses even more expensive Polyoil Ester. Have seen good analysis on the board with it. Might be a bit overpriced though.

About 10 years ago I could find it here in Texas at the Western Auto Stores before they went out of business. It was a good value. I would not hesitate to use it again if it was available.

Thanks guys! I remember seeing it several years ago at a fraction of the current price. It was also priced comparatively lower versus the more "mainstream" synthetics. Advanced Auto and I believe Auto Zone carry the 5w- and 10w30 weights, but they're not much less than M1.

AutoZone got rid of it for a $1 per quart last year.......and I got 42 quarts of it

I'm using it in my dad's Honda, maybe down the road I will do a UOA.

Some King Sooper's stores in Colorado sales it; otherwise hit up a Havoline/Texaco oil lube store. Otherwise Havoline blend is good as well.

Goldenrod - No flame intended, but just what put the notion in your head that synthetic oil will destroy seals?

wayvinwayne,

No sir, it's actually all the posts by Mighty HD and his leaky GMC 2500 HD truck with only 1400 miles on it with M1 that's got me thinking like that.
