They had finally started getting rid of the violent gangs on the street. Having a functional police is the first step for becoming a normal functioning state and not a failed state. Fire department, etc. are secondary to that.

I don't think they even had an army.

We also donated, and wanted to go volunteer as pharmacists, but when we called the number, they said they didn't need any more (after like 2 days since we got the email from apha - American Pharmacists' Association)...

wifey is VERY disappointed and sad

+1

I just heard from a cop Miami might be getting 45K or more Haitians...North Miami has a very large Haitian community...The crime rate in North Miami is off the charts...If you work in North Miami you defintley want get out of there by sundown.

With unemployment in Miami at a all time high like everywhere else its going to makes things go from worse to worser.

Anybody thinking about moving to Miami or anywhere in South Florida think again.

BTW Florida has just granted the Haitians visiting the right to stay here indefintley...They are also getting a work permit as of yesterday.

We have a regulation where we accept refugees of failed states or countries stricken by calamities. I don't recall what the term was but I would expect more Haitian refugees being given asylum here.

Equating ethnic or social groups with crime is a big fallacy but a few bad apples always give the larger population a bad name.

Haiti definitely needs our help. As for offering asylum, they have to be very selective. You don’t one of these jokers, stealing a coffin, coming to live among us.

This fallacy has high merit. It's very easy for someone from the Dominican Republic to go via "the canal" (their term) and reach Puerto Rico where legit documents can be had to enter the US proper. Reading PA is full of them. This was told to me by a Dominican "legal illegal" who was not an active criminal. That is, he was otherwise productive and law abiding beyond his invisible criminal illegal status.

CROWNVIC4LIFE,

The situation in Miami is bad right now, with all the stufff thats gonna happen in the next 6 months, once the 82nd Airborne leaves Haiti they will be needed in Miami to maintain order, it might be like Detroit in the movie RoboCop.

Its funny that you mention North Miami. My parents came to the USA in the mid 1950's and bought a matchbox house in North Miami. My dad was on I-95 recently and decided to pass by their old house they lived in just to take a look. He said he was almost [censored] in his pants at what their old neighborhood had become..... he was actually praying that his car would not break down in his old 'hood'

Respectfully, isn't that a decision made on the Federal level?

Yes to your question...Actually its 18 months not indefinitley...But I am sure the 18 months will be extended much longer when the 18 months are up.

I wish people around the world who think that Americans are fat, stupid, lazy, and above all, selfish....to read this thread. At least it might disprove the selfish part.

Spend a few hours a day practicing law and you may very well have a less idealistic, and more eyes open opinion about this.

Until Haiti decides to help itself, throwing money at it will produce little to no improvement in the living condition of its population. Taxpayer money has been thrown at it for decades with little to nothing to show for it. There is no reason to expect a different outcome this time.

Private charities can and should do exactly as they please, and people should be encouraged to donate to the charity (ies) of their choice (regularly, not just in bad times) but Haiti is no place for taxpayer dollars currently borrowed from China.

Cajun and creole accents are still common here. It's because NOLA is still not rebuilt, and the people that fled have not returned to their homes. They may never be able to return home, and there are plenty of places in this country that need attention besides NOLA.

You have a point. Large amounts of foreign aid has enabled the small impoverished island to balloon it's population to over 9 million people. What a disaster waiting to happen. Just like New Orleans was a disaster waiting to happen.
