I am going to replace the front rotors and brake pads on my 2000 Sebring Convertible. I was thinking of getting some Raybestos PG Plus rotors and Raybestos Professional Grade Ceramic pads from Murrays Auto parts. What do you think of those? Do you know of other reasonably priced rotors and pads? I want quiet and low brake dust.

Sounds like a good combo to me! Im using a similar combo right now on my 04 Altima(just insatlled this past weekend) on all 4 wheels. Purchaced everything from RockAuto.com back in November at a really good price and hung on til now to replace everything. My rotors were all chewed up from the winter salt from the past 5 winters(04,05,06,07&08) and causing some pulsation and will only pulse more as the weather turns warmer. Original pads didn't look too bad for ware but, couldn't justify reusing them with new rotors.

I bought a set of ATE rotors and pads for my Toyota and am quite happy with them. Little "soft" at first. I reinstalled the OEM shims which I later found out I didn't need. I e-mailed ATE with that question and they were very helpful. I flushed with their ATE blue fluid as well. Got mine from Tire Rack for around $200 for everything. If you want cheaper, then I can't help. Low to no dust and very quiet.

based upon what???

I use ATE or Balo rotors, and tend to use pagid, textar or ate pads.

Ive heard mixed stuff about raybestos, thats why Ive never really considered... what makes those good?

Thanks,

JMH

Well Raybestos has been doing brakes for a long time......

The combo I was looking at was $ 50.00 for ceramic pads. Rotors were 72.00 for both minus $20.00 discount for buying better pads.

So about: $ 102.00

Akebono pads (their best ones), and Balo/Brembo rotors have been a good match for me. Hawk pads too were good if you need a little more stopping power.

Probably Bendix CT-3 if you want a pad that delivers better performance without compromising dust.

Centric 105 series ceramic is dirt cheap from RockAuto, and probably delivers the same performance/noise/dust as the Raybestos pads.

It really depends what you are looking for. Autobarn has great prices on Bendix, Akebono and Brembo products.

I recently installed a set of raybestos rotors (very nice x-hatching finish pattern) and Monroe Dynamic pads($30 rebate) on my 97 Acura 2.5TL. So far I'm well pleased w/ braking performance and absence of teeth-rattling vibration during braking.

Trapped rotors of 94-97 Acuras and Hondas are a major PIA, but I finally developed a good procedure (not easy but w/i ability of average diy ability) after three rotor replacements this spring, 94 Accord, 97 Acura 2.2TL, and 97 Acura 2.5TL. If anyone has a need PM me w/ your email address and I'll provide my brief written description.

regards

Well the sale was going off and I was stuck at work so I had my better half go to Murrays to get the stuff. She wrote down what I wanted and told them. They gave her the right rotors but instead of Raybestos pads they gave her Satisfied Ceramic Pads. (Still got the rotor discount though.....:). I decided to use those as they were a tad bit cheaper.

Seem to be working good after install.

Are these brands any better than OEM (Motorcraft) rotors and pads?

BTW, what's a quiet and relatively dust-free type of pad?

The ProACT pads seem to deliver fairly low dust. Their performance isn't spectacular, but it's decent. I don't really pay much attention to dust as it isn't a concern to me.

You can formulate a semi-metallic pad that is quieter and less dusty than a ceramic pad, or vice-versa. It really depends on what the pad was designed for.

my brother metal PBR brake pad ate his rotors

but i would go for hawk's pad with brembo.

The Raybestos AT products are very well made. Nice anti-corrosion coating. Just put a set on an 04 Lexus RX330 and am very inpressed with the performance. Fit and finish on the parts is very good and the warranty is excellent as well. JMO.

Different pad materials on the inner and outboard pads? One pad for low dust and one pad for improved stopping power?

I have Raybestos PG Plus rotors and Professional Grade Ceramic pads on my wife's RAV4. They had about 5k miles on them when they started to pulsate, and they are making a lot of squeeling noises now. I have Centric Rotors with Monroe Ceramic pads on my Altima, and they are great. I will probably use Centric products from now on. They come with the black rust proofing on the rotors and are not made in China! Raybestos rotors are made in China! I don't like that. I got my Centric parts from RockAuto.com, they are cheaper than Raybestos, and a better brand from my use of both products. I would recommend against the Raybestos products.

Developing a pulsation and/or noise complaint after only 5k almost screams an installer error.

Pulsation problems which develop after such a short period of time are almost always a cause of either improper lug nut torquing (did not use torque wrench) or failure to check/adjust rotor runout.
