I have nothing but respect for fast v8's, there are a LOT of them. Heck, I am not a huge ford fan, but when I see a mustang (600+ cube) run a 7.24 @ 193 i'm pretty dang wowed. I have noticed one thing though...

the really fast v8 guys at the racetrack run better mufflers, and quieter cars than the slow guys. Just like the faster imports don't have that nasty farty sound. (with imports, it comes from running too big a muffler, and too small an exhaust diameter- yuck)

As far as i'm concerned, "rice" can be domestic or foreign, and it's "that which doesn't make you faster, corner better, etc."

I'm also a bit old fashioned and think that a performance car should get wailed on.

Then again I can be heard far away w/ my regular exhaust, but I can tell you it don't sound like a hill billy truck. Lite little car you got there. Mine weighs roughly 1000lbs More

So that's how you get that annoying sound from little 4cyls? I had a 89 civic for a winter car (it died, threw a rod through the block only had it for 6k miles) and the exhaust fell off. So I got one of those ebay cats (straight through) a thrush turbo muffler, and the guy at the exhaust shop threw some 2 1/4" pipe on it, and I wondered why it was so darn quiet.

The LS6 was also available in Chevelles and Monte Carlos. Or you could get a crate LS6 or LS7 from 1970 to the early 1990s, and drop it in whatever you wanted.


Sorry, but this is one of my pet peeves. I'm currently warming over a used 1989 LS6 crate motor for my Nova.

You forgot cubic $$$'s I'll bet I can not only go faster for less in American stuff, I can also do it reliable.


I have to laugh when I see all the tought talk about the RICE drag race cars. Like trying to do it the hard way is never mentioned. Sure you any idiot can drop 6 figures and do it, but sure seems like a waste if you really want to race.
The RICE cars run NHRA now cause NHRA figured they can make money watching them fast the hard way. They always have to toss in the rule "No V8's." **** even if it's a dial in race, they're no match for a real race car.
I say let them come play with out the constraints and lets see how has the best steel...lol

I never see that RICE junk run at out track quick 16 class race.
 
most of the v8 guys at our local tracks don't want to run with the imports because they run 13's & 14's. hahaha. All of the domestics that i've met at the track that are running 11, 10, and any kind of single digit number usually have some respect for "rice" that drives 100 miles to the track, rips off a low 11, and drives home.

Car trailer has a bad tire, or the tow vehicle is out, and most of the v8 guys aren't coming to the strip because either they're fast enough to where they're breaking parts, and they're not street legal, or they're just slow as ****, and think they need a trailer anyway, because their 14 second open headered camaro needs slicks.

most of the "ricey" cars that I follow are running NDRA anyway- I don't think that 7 & 8 second quarter miles are terribly slow for actual cars- sure they're not rails, or funny cars, but those are like watching "stock" car racing. They have about as much in common with the stock car as... oh wait, nothing. I haven't seen a v8 powered RWD taurus in--- ever.

That's a completely different motor not to mention it's a big block. I'll be more specfic. The only production car that offers a Gen III LS6 smallblock besides the c5 z06 is a CTS-V

Not a problem. I even know theyre used to be an Lt-1 which is completely different from my LT1

Even a look at the rear end of a Pontiac G6 confirms that Chrysler is heavily influencing someone at the General. You could park a Neon, and a G6 side by side and have a hard time telling them apart. Heck even the profiles are similar except for size.
 
You guys got it all wrong, the popularity of rice car is not about how many cylinder or displacement you got, or how much torque you got, or whatsoever.

The popularity is about:

1. You get a small car and then gradually start buying stuff on ebay to upgrade it yourself, the car is cheap, so you get in with a hope.

2. It is about how many "after market" support you got. Why is civic popular and corolla not? It is the parts and mods out there.

3. It is about handling. Civic is no longer popular among ricers (after they redesign and got rid of the double wishbone in 2001), it is WRX and Lancer Evo that got popular, so are Focus SVT and Neon SRT.


Thinking with the mind of a drag racer with V8 will not win the rice market.

I agree, there is no replacement for displacement.

Just because my motor is 2.0L at idle, doesn't mean anything. At full throttle the motor just happens to be 6L.

I'm not against big V8's, in fact I LOVE a nice big block just as much as the next guy. I'm just all about efficiency. 900hp N/A 502? Very cool. 2000hp blown 502? way more cool.

doing more with the same displacement is always cooler.

Just because you've been able to smoke some bumble bee exhaust civics doesn't mean that there isn't one out there that can and will humiliate you. I ran into a 685hp civic hatch (full Garrett GT35R setup) one time that was frighteningly fast.

I see more riced mustangs, civics, camaro's, firebirds, neons, dsm's, etc than I see nice, clean fast ones. That's just the way it is.

It's the well done ones that can be appreciated, I don't care what badge is on the nose.
