General G Max...

I think it came out last summer- I looked at it for my Mustang BULLITT. Didn't see any bad reviews performance wise...but I have no clue as to how many miles people are getting out of them.

My son put them on his 2011 Honda Fit. They completely transformed the car, it now handles like a go kart vs. the mushy stock tires.

They have been excellent in dry and wet weather. No snow experience on them (he runs General Altimax Arctic for winter). A tiny bit more noise than the stock tires, but not bad. He lost 1 MPG vs. the stock tires, but the fun factor is worth it.

that's completely different categories though.
G max is an Ultra high performance all season
Altmax is a more normal 'touring' all season

We love the altimax HP on my wife's Elantra, which is a sedate daily driver.
IDK if lucerne has enough performance oriented handling charachteristics to 'deserve' a UHP tire. (it might - i just don't know)

I was thinking of the Gmax for the BMW 330Ci

The lucerne is not in that catigory. I will more than likely order the HP. The G-max is about the same price and they have almost identical utqg's I am more intersted in longevity than performance. The last set of eagle gt's on the lucenre didn't do very well. Less than 15,000 miles and they need to be replace.

Thanks for your input 97tbird. It helps

No prob. Like I said, after experiencing the Altimax HP on the elanatra twice, with its great wet weather performance and all round dry performance, we will again go with it.
I am getting a set for the tbird, too, pretty soon.

I think you will like them.

Ordered the HP's today from discounttires.com They had the best price at $120 each plus shipping for 235-55-17

I did get a good quote from a local tire dealer for the HP's for my fiero. So I going local for this car. The origianl GT+4's are now 24 years old and I don't trust them anymore. This car never sees rain but the dry performance is what i am after. These are 15 inch rims and I found that the selection for 15 inch performance tires is dwindling..

yeah wheels are huge these days, even on small cars...
anything over 18" is a pain to get tires for. on some cars I can understand 18 or 19 but not much over that

I put Gmax's on my Z about a month ago replacing Nittos. Overall good impression as they are great in wet which was my biggest concern. Dry traction is ok, not as good as the Nittos as I felt I could take a curve at a higher speed than the Gmax tires. My Z is a dd so no track time or real high performance need. I would recommend them. I chose these over the DWS due to availability and price. I think either would work well.

Good to hear. I might seriously consider these when the next tire change comes for the bimmer...in some areas, Gmax scored higher than the DWS... (TR survey)

How much did you save over the DWS, by going with Gmax? Thanks.

Did you just put the DWS on? Are they already nearing end of their life? How many miles did you put on them so far?

As for comparison against G-Max, I know this is very subjective, but judging by the tread design, they may not perform as well on snow as DWS. Alas, I know you have your T-bird equipped with winter tires, so this may not be a concern.

But if that's the case, then why not go all out and get dedicated summer rubber that will really transform your 3.

IME the switch to summer only rubber has made a HUGE difference.

Better everything! Dry grip, wet grip, less noise, smoother ride... I could go on.

I strongly recommend anyone with a car that they like to drive consider a set of summer only tires!

I am going to go beyond this even (when my BFG Super Sport All Seasons are toast, even though they ARE one of the best dry handling all seasons out there), and go to one of the 100 treadwear 'hard compound R' tires (Toyo RA-1/R888, Nitto NT-01, etc.) for my next pure summer donuts.

My buddy just put a set in 215/55R16 on his '92 Camry (V6, 5 speed, with OE Solara wheels). They look like a good summer-oriented all-season and they were on sale for a great price at Canadian Tire, so I recommended them. He does have winter tires. They wouldn't be my choice if I had to run an all-season through a real winter, but a pure summer tire seems a little extreme for our unpredictable weather and dirty roads, as well as occasional gravel roads. He also wants something that will provide good tread life, and anything 400 or higher on the UTQG has done that in my experience.

I only have about 4-5k on the DWS, so it's pretty new still...so far great but too early to tell...never had the chance to test in snow...we had 0 snow this winter in NC. Never had to put the winter tires on the Tbird either.

They're not as sharp as a summer tire for sure (Had factory Michelin Pilot sports Summer tires before the DWS) , but i really don't want to spend that much to change tires every summer and winter, so I think the DWS serves as a good middle ground overall tire for the ZHP. I do have the Tbird with snow tires BUT I don't want the ZHP to stay in the garage all the time when there's snowy/wintry weather either, so I thought going UHP AS was the best overall solution ...

as you said, I also wondered about the snow performance of the G Max...I think by time I am ready for the next set of UHP AS tires, the Gmax will be better known, have more reviews and the TR survey will be more meaningful...

While I respect your friends right to choose whatever he wants I can assure you that tires that score over 400 on treadwear will never be on a car I own again. They are simply not comparable to a good summer only tire, which will simply not score very high on treadwear. Typically the summer tire will offer better braking, better cornering, etc. Usually even better wet performance, depending on make.

But my car has never been down a gravel road, either!
