Fuel Requirements By State

Iowa law requires that pumps be labeled with the ethanol mixture.
Nearly every station offers an ethanol-free option, amazing considering the power of our farm/ethanol lobby.

Octane rating can also be a clue, but it is not a sure thing.
Generally our "regular" is Octane 87, then add 10 percent ethanol, you get octane 89. Much of the premium - 92,93 is ethanol free.

Some chains mix octane 85 (mountain altitude gas) with 10 percent ethanol to give 87. This has to be the worst possible choice, 10 percent ethanol and still low octane.

Yes, I know octane 85 is just fine at high altitude... that is not relevant in any part of Iowa!! We ski off the top of haystacks and manure piles here.

Like others here, I avoid ethanol as much as possible.

The map is for federal EPA mandates. Individual states are free to specify their own requirements and regions for where RFG, E10 etc. is sold beyond the EPA requirements.

Ethanol is an EPA consumption mandate. Since E85 consumers aren't biting, to keep up with the mandate fuel suppliers had to roll out E10 everywhere the infrastructure can be built. The tax credit sweetens the deal. Some states offered additional incentives and made laws to get ethanized quicker. Other states get the E10 infrastructure as money comes available to build it.

I think most of Kentucky is E10. No requirement to notify the public. I believe this started mid 2009 as tha this is when my fuel mileage dropped about 8 percent.

I've always found this odd as well. In the link that severach posted above, it says that the Iowa Corn Growers Assn opposes the ethanol lobby's recent efforts to make Iowa like other states (enforced, unlabeled, all E10). It's pretty bad when even the people that grow the grain are saying: "Whoa, whoa, ethanol lobby, that's not right!"
