Went down to my local Walmart where I go 90% of the time to any of them. Walked back to the oil, filter, etc. isle. Grapped this FRAM PH4967 and this is what it looked like. Grabbed the one underneath it and it was the exact same. Grabbed the one behind it and it was the same. I stopped there -- bad bach of oil filters? Could not get a good enough angle with the camera to see internals. Checked the TG4967 & FE4967 -- they looked normal. Was not going to open a XG box without purchasing. When I wiped the grime between my fingers -- it just blended right into my skin and left zero residue rather quickly.

Someone burn tested the Oring? 🤪
Possibly fine Oring dust got spilled on a bunch of base plate's they installed anyways?
"Sure Grip" material on the wrong end? 😅

I recently bought the same filter at Walmart. The first box I opened had about a finger tip size of a similar black substance by the inlet holes. I just left it. No idea what it was. I might be switching to Microgard's.

Weird. Almost looks like a coating of graphite. And it's got the beveled recess thread boss design seen on Champ Labs, rather than Fram type used on smallest filters like topic. I'm thinking something from the manufacturing line left it.

This filter has been downsized and cheapened. That’s a pretty new car to use this. It’s actually a brand new car. I have to show the one that I cut open. You can do what you want but the Toyota yzzf1 isn’t going to do any harm, if the 2023 has the room for it over the N1. I was all excited at finding a USA made filter in this size, then cut it open.

Non-existent QC?🍿

Crazy what makes it onto the shelves nowadays. I don't think I'll ever use another Fram after all the recent drama.
Did this one make it onto the shelf that way from Fram?

Or was a Wal-mart shopper involved?

Lots of used things, including filters and jugs of oil, get returned at Wal-mart.

Which is among the reasons why I don’t shop there.

The black soot doesn't seem to really be on the base gasket or seen on the ADBV through the base plate holes at the same level of coveage. So seems the base plate was covered with soot before assembly.

Typical modern USA made garbage. The cost to to produce quality parts would cut into the record profit increase this quarter, so they accept a higher failure rate and crank out sub par product; and many folks will buy them just because they are made in USA. Of course, the CEO doesn't care as long as the investors are happy. Kinda reminds me of health insurance...

The fact the material does not look like it is on the ADBV leads me to believe this happened when the tapping plate was separate from the filter before assembly. Might be soot left over from the heat treatment process of the tapping plate material. Still a quality miss none the less.
