Jeez this conversation is taking some weird turns.

VAG has had more than their share of govt subsidies so it’s not just American cars or Japanese cars.

The angst against SUVs and crossovers is telling. Last I heard we still have the freedom to buy whatever we want. If it guzzles fuel then the owner understands they will pay more. Today’s modern vehicles do very well in fuel economy.

Absolutely agree with you that buyers can buy whatever they want.
We are talking about Ford's decision to venture into SUV only market, or as CNBC yesterday reported, they are pretty much saying: we do not want to bother with EPA regulations for cars. What Obama administration did is actually made easier for manufacturers (lobbied by GM, Ford and FCA) to meet CAFE requirements with SUV's. SUV's and sedans have different requirements.
Problem is, taxpayers might be again on the hook because of these short term pressures by shareholders. Would not be first time great American corporations went down because of short term profit.

The American car companies and especially the Big 2 never seemed to have any long term goals. I agree that cutting sedans out of the lineup leaves a huge hole. These companies need to look in the mirror to see why they didn’t sell. Meanwhile there are still a lot of sedans from other companies being sold even though that is shrinking.

Time will tell if this decision helps or sinks Ford.

So what is the rationale to keep investing in a declining market? If you read that WSJ article I linked a while back even Honda and Toyota are having huge issues with NEW product. Toyota has over $2k on the hood of the Camry, Honda's Accord sales are down 20%, Nissan Altima tanked when they reduced rebates.

Why would anyone invest in that market when the "top dogs" are having huge issues selling their NEW product?

If you really want sedans to have a future sell your CUVs (which most of you own) and buy a sedan. Tell your friends too.

Or better yet, buy the few remaining, soon to be non-existent compacts/sub compacts that most in this land apparently HATE so vehemently, and get ahead of the next round of $5.00 to $7.00/gallon fuel prices, and STOP worrying about how you'll fare in a crash against all of the 3 ton tanks on the road, and think about steering out of that collision instead.
