What would you guys recommed for a first oil change? The cummins gets an intial break in at the factory of about 6,000 miles so states the manual.
should i wait til 7500 miles recommended interval?

Since3 the weather will be warming up, my suggestion would be Delo CI4+ 15w40 or Delvac.

Rotella 5w-40 wouldnt hurt either for a little extra $$$

Yes, I would change before the 7500 mile interval for the first oil change. Get all of that break in gunk out of the engine oil. After you change it I would run it another 5000 miles and dump again. After that, you can keep changing your oil at the recommended change interval OR do what most of us do and get a bypass filter and enjoy clean oil circulating through your engine at all times.

I'm a firm believer in doing the first couple of changes on short intervals. The cost of an additional 3 gallons of oil won't break me; and it does give me some peace of mind.

I did the first oil change on my '03 CTD at 3500 miles, then the next one @ 8000 miles.

The first oil change was a complimentary change by the dealer and I'm not sure what oil they used; I used Rotella for the 2nd change.

I didn't shift over to syn oil until around 18000 miles.

Edit: I also changed the diff's/xfer case/transmission (6-speed) at 18000. Found some glitter in the rear diff oil. I used Amsoil throughout.

I changed the oil (Mobil Delvac 15w40) in my 2004 Ram at 1900 miles, and plann to do it again at 5000. I could not believe how black the oil was and at 2900 it is really dark again. I wanted to get any initial "gunk and junk" out of the engine from the initial break-in. May be overkill, but I feel a lot better....

Don't forget the axles either. I would have done mine earlier, say 5k, if I had known how black they'd be at 15k. I have a 3750 mile oil change as it's a CARB engine so I ended up doing mine kind of early anyway.

Good luck ever getting your 04 to keep oil clean for more than a couple thousand miles. The 600s blacken the oil VERY quickly. On my last change, the residual oil from my 7500 mile change, even after draining for over an hour, made the new oil too black to even see thru on the dipstick after a 2 minute idle to stop and check levels 20 mins. later.

So now I have 500 miles on some very very black oil.

The 2003 '48 state' standard output (non-CARB) and the 2003 high output can run pretty clean, with some people noting that the oil stays clean for quite awhile. Those with high soot loadings should remember that soot can cause high wear, and that a synthetic oil by itself doesn't counter it's effects and won't help to extend drain intervals.

Thanks for the replys , I'll be changing my oil at 2500 miles and threrafter at 7500. I got to stop driving this thing, not even 2 weeks old(til friday)and it has 2000 miles.

This is my second diesel, and have been doing 5-6k oil changes for a long time. First 30k on this truck (Ford 7.3L) did 4-6k changes depending on the oil used. Last three oil changes have been at 5k, 6.5k., 7.5k, with RoT 15-40, RP 15-40, Rot-T grp3 syn 5-40. Currently 3k so far on the Valv PB Ex 5-40, looking maybe to get to an OCI of 10k sometime as I think with the large sump capacity of this engine it could make it easily, but I also think this engine shears down oil more that yours. Haven't done any analysis yet though as migh finely tuned ear o meter makes me want to change the oil before I think it would be justified in doing one. Since oil use is pretty much zero in 5k I think the engine has broken in very nicely and wear should be low. I am a big believer in shorter OCI early in the life of the engine until fully broken in. For this truck was about 30k.

This is my first diesel, so I am learning every day....changing oil at 7500 miles seems very foreign to me, as I have always changed oil at 3000 miles intervals.

The dealer said that 3750 miles was the correct interval, especially if towing any...

I had been planning on changing oil every 3-4000....is this overkill with a diesel???
