My daughter has an 05 Civic ex has 20k on it, she took it to a Firestone auto center for an oil change for $16.99 they put a synthetic blend 10w30, I checked the oil recently and was over filled and the oil is very thick, the web site for Firestone shows 10w30 high mileage for the only blend that they offer, I feel its way thick the car calls for 5w-20, if they had put in 5w30 not high mileage I wouldn't feel so bad and probably would've left it alone.

I decided to change it after 2k miles I just considered it a flush, and switched to PP 5w-20 full synthetic at a great price with a Napa Gold filter, I noticed a huge difference between the Firestone filter and the Napa Gold which is similar to the OEM filter as far as size.

Who makes the Firestone filter? its huge should i have kept it? it looked really good it even uses a roun o ring like some K&N filters.

I'm kinda picky because of the warranty, don't want to void it using the wrong oil.

Another good reason to change ones own oil. However you would think Firestone would be able to do a decent job.

Having said that, it also brings up the question, did your daughter ask for a specific oil? I'm guessing not. However they should have at the very least followed the mfg's specs. DOes the civic allow for 10w30 in certain climates?

As for the filter, The Firestone one looks like an old Champion filter. It'll work, it's just oversized, so nothing to worry about there. The Napa/Wix 1356 is an excellent filter.

I don't know if they spec a diff oil for certain climates they probably do, she has no clue about oil so she dint ask for anything just an oil change, the cap is clearly marked 5w-20 just like my truck, I just want her to get the best MPG and maintain her warranty.

Wow that's extremely overfilled. I thought my 1cm over the mark was a lot, dang! Napa Golds are great filters though, I'm currently using one on my Integra

maybe they overfill for girls who bring their cars in. they probably have tons of cars come in by women with low oil levels. they think their doing her a favor. seriously!

That oversized filter looks like the old Honda 4 cylinder standard size. Honda stopped using that size somewhere around the 2002 model year or so. I have no idea how good or bad the Firestone branded oil filters are.

The chain stores are highly variable in skill and attention to detail. Some seem ok, others are horrible. Personally I like to do the work myself because then I know it is right. Second choice is to find a local independent specialist. Third choice is a good dealer.

I agree, thats why I do my own work, I like doing all types of work (I know my limits) I just did the cars fourth oil change all by me except that last one, only because she was hiding a dent from me and dint want to come around she's 18 (divorced parents)and I make her car payments cause I don't want her driving something unreliable besides she's the baby, but looks like I'm going to need to teach her a few things about oil and maintenance in general, I have her brother doing Hi's own maintenance, I don't expect her to change oil but she will know what to ask for, and to at least check it, and do oil samples, just kidding no samples.

I'm sticking with Napa gold and PP from now on till something better comes along.

Thanks the replies I never knew oil was so involved I like

And yes it was at least a qt over filled

Maybe for 17 bucks they can't afford to have a more skilled person doing the oil change, or they have so much turn over that they guy doing the oil change is learning on your car.

That is an excellent idea. I think it should be a required lesson(s) for any young person who is first learning to be responsible for his/her own transportation. If you can make it mandatory to learn before getting the keys...even to the point of giving them a test, you'll all be money ahead in the future. And yes, I'm serious about the test.

My buddy took his 1991 GMC Blazer to the local Firestone Tire Auto Center for an oil change & lube.

They called him in an hour after drop off. The reason for the call? They "could not find the oil filler cap, so they couldn't fill it with new oil." He had to go back & show them....no joke.

If it were me, I would have told them to leave it alone, brought my own oil to put in, & asked for money back.

I purchased an excellent set of Bridgestone Potenza G009 tyres, balancing and wheel alignment from a local Firestone dealer in September 2005.

When I returned 5K later for free alignment, rotation and balance check, I learnt that original alignment wasn't performed correctly and would need to be done again for additional cost. Plus they attempted to add other services for additional cost as well.

I decided at that time to avoid all Firestone dealers in future. I established a good relationship with service department of my local Ford dealer. Now, even though it cost USD$20.00 for rotation related services, I sleep better knowing they are doing a great job.
