File Your Taxes For Free

Heard about it on KFI AM last week. Lots of the "free" tax programs charged or charge people. You need to go on the actual IRS.gov website to go to the legit free file website which works for people without complicated tax returns.

OP posted the IRS website

I've used the IRS website for probably 10 years now. What I used to do was claimed married and 99 on the check so no income tax was withheld. I'd calculate what should have come out and put that amount in savings. Then come first of the year, I file accurately and pay what is owed, keeping the interest that money accrued throughout the year. Granted, it wasn't much, but better than giving the government an interest free loan.

freetaxusa.com

federal totally free.. no janky nickle and diming like turd-bo tax. or H&R
We use Taxhawk - free federal and $14.99 for state. It walks me thru our simple taxes easy peasy.

LOL; Taxhawk and freetaxusa are the same EXACT company under multiple names. Exact same contact addresses.

Makes sense. Yes a couple of years ago now someone mentioned FreeTax on here and since then I'm a customer.

For those who don't know...it's as easy as TurboTax without the excessive charges. $15 state is all you pay unless you tack on the optional extras. Filed and done 2 weeks ago.

I have my deductions nailed. I either owe or get back ~300 each year.

It has always been free to file your taxes. If you just have a w2 and can do math and read instructions you can do the paper file.
I had lots of free time in 2020 so I paper filed. I owed money so I paid it online and sent the paperwork in. They literally did not look at it for 2 years. It actually caused me some trouble because I could not get a tax transcript for something I needed.

All the IRS employees "working from home". What a farce.

I agree. Freetaxusa is the free version, if you qualify. If not, TaxHawk works well even if your return isn't real simple.
