Device A (Phone) - I used youtube to watch rv front loaders etc browsed it anonymously

Device B (Laptop) - I signed on to facebook and facebook had a whole bunch of ads for RC caterpillar front loaders etc.

Wow, is google selling fb my browsing history? or is it my ISP?

I mentioned kayaking in idle conversation then was flooded with kayak ads.

Only bug in the room is an Alexa. Hmm...

This kind of " Gathering" data is as old as the first internet browsers. How do you thing Google, Face book etc became so profitable by providing Free services.

Exactly. If you're not paying, then you are the product.

For me it was about waterproofing membrane after having a conversation on a job site near my phone.

You could have tracking cookies in your browser from Facebook. Both services could also be collecting data about your surfing habits via your IP address instead of relying on your being logged into them.

Yep.

I did "build & price" on 2020 3500 Chev & GMCs. Both around $96K in Canuck bucks. Today I'm swamped with dealer offers. They even know my favorite color. (sick of black and black interiors)

I've never seen an Amsoil ad.

Welcome to the internet ! Everything you do on the internet is tracked and this data is sold. It's even tracked anonymously and sold anonymously but with enough metadata that companies like Facebook can combine all of those pieces and guess that it belongs to you. In your case, they guessed correctly it seems.

Click on an ad here at BITOG and watch what happens. Same thing will.....

yeap, everything is tracked.

only common denominator is:

1. ISP (comcast) cable box
2. google account is live on pda phone for gmail but no account signed on to for youtube

to it seems even if I don't sign on to youtube, it still tracks user context from other google apps for ads.

I am getting news from South Korea because one of my coworkers are into K pop, and New Deli news because others browse similar news.

They figure you might be interested as well, sometimes they are wrong.

Google owns both YT and Chrome. Your activity on one is shared across all Google products/platforms and that means advertisers on FB have access, for a fee, to your activity and searches on YT.

Deep into Google settings you can turn off activity tracking and you can browse FB in cognito. Doesn't mean you won't see ads, in fact you'll see them but they'll be generic and not based on target info.

Either you are connected to one of more of the various internet services with your info spread all over the place.

Or you go true off-grid and it ain't. Sorry, I don't believe there is much middle ground in today's world.

My previous ''smart'' phones weren't hooked into the goggle Youtube thing. I got a new phone last year, the full Android package...and now Youtube and FB know what I've been doing. Not happy with being snooped on, but now I have things come up that I am actually interested in, rather than just random rubbish I don't want to know about.

The way i see it is if I'm going to get ads no matter what, i might as well get ads that maybe possibly interest me. And besides, I've got bigger fish to fry than stay up all night wondering who may or may not be looking at my boring online activity.

Yup I concur completely. I'd rather see ads for Silverados than Audis.

I got to laugh at what people allow google to do in the name of "free" stuff.

They allow google to scan the content of their emails for "free" email, track their phone calls, track the phone numbers of the people they are making calls too, read their private messages. Google even knows exactly where you move your mouse on webpages and whether you choose to click on an ad on that page.

Google knows your mind better then you and those that think its innocent to allow huge corporations into the workings of your mind ... well I got a bridge to sell you, since when do people trust the worlds largest information corporation with the internal think pattern of their own minds and that of their families ? ... my god, I say no more ... *L*

Amazing, its easy to "delete" google out of your life if one really wants too.

Here is the first step to educating yourselves, only a small percentage will watch the entire thing, the words out of the most successful corporation CEO in the world and they will still choose to ignore it, make excuses so they can get free stuff.

I shared with my adult son that in high school we were required to read George Orwell's book named 1984. It was about big brother (government) controlling our lives with propaganda and 100% constant surveillance. Now, we purchase, sign up for, and ask to be monitored!
