I just bought this truck a few weeks ago and would normally run Motorcraft on all Ford's, but don't think i will because of the tear issues.

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with another filter on this motor? I know they're a bit sensitive and tend to have startup noise on certain filters. My initial thought was the Fram Ultra, but i'm really not sure.

Thanks!

I believe the Motorcrafts are less prone to the tearing than the Purolators. I use Motorcraft most of the time and never had one tear and I cut them open all the time. Otherwise I would go Wix or Fram Ultra depending your change interval.

Motorcraft is a Purolator filter, and the 820S is one of the worse for tearing.

I have just been using whatever on these 5.4 3v.
I don't care for the Supertech ST2 filters (both the Wix made and Champ made use a combo valve (Although this Champ made Purepro from my broth in laws truck held up well)).
Reguar Wix/NAPA Gold is a good option, as is any Fram.

Napa Gold 1372 / Wix 51372 is what fits the M22x1.5 threads. Works on Ford and Dodge gas pickups

Baldwin filters have always been good. I used them on my 5.4, & now using on the 3.5 EcoBoost.

Sorry. cant remember which filter was Baldwins # for the 5.4

When I had my F150 with the 5.4 I used K&N, Bosch, Motorcraft, and Fram at different times over the years. Today if I still had my truck I would use Fram Ultra.

Yes, when I had my 215,000 mile Ford I ran 100% Motorcraft. Fram Ultra is my new choice now. Well said, Licntex.

I've used Fram Ultra on the 4.6 2v for YEARS. It's high quality and relatively inexpensive.

For any Ford Modular engine I own, I require the filter to have a base end bypass, and a silicone anti-drainback valve at minimum. Above that I require a blended or synthetic media, and lastly a thick can. The best filter I have found yet that meets all of my requirements is a Ford Racing Performance Parts FL-820S. They are expensive but so was my Marauder. I have used regular FL-820S Motorcraft filters on it, and sometimes K&N HP-2010's, but haven't used the K&N's in a long while. (Since I got picky about the bypass valve location, K&N puts it in the dome end). It is my firm belief that the FRPP FL-820S is the perfect filter for a Ford Modular, and second place is the Motorcraft FL-820S, despite popular opinion on this forum. You do have the USCAR36 SAE standard now, which Motorcraft Filters meet.

For those who recommend OEM; I would absolutely run one normally and did put the MC on my brothers '07 for years. However, i wanted other options that 1. Aren't prone to tearing and 2. Don't cause startup rattle on these motors.

Linc, thanks for the TG suggestion as well. I tend to forget about those.
