i am having a problem with my 2000 chrysler 300m. i took it to pep boys (since they inspect your car for free and found nothing wrong buh they did get me to pay for a full oil change lol) then i took it to the dealership and they found a evap emission hose leak, so i had to get the hoses replaced which was about $550 bucks just to have the engine light turn on the next day so i took it back to the dealership and they said the odb 2 scanner was still showing a evap emission hose leak (very small leak) so they said it could either be temperature sensor or the pump (not sure what the pump was called) so i got the temperature sensor replaced first which was $192(including labor) now i will be going to get the pump replaced on tuesday.(which they are charging $250). i was planning on taking a trip to san diego from las vegas but im not sure if i want toos now.Plus the big steep hill thats like 6000 feet in elevation scares me seeing as so many cars don't make it up the hill.) the car has about 103,000 miles on it never had problem with it till now. one of my friends told me to take the car to a g2 specialist ( i think thats the name of the guys who specialize on evap) and he just said run the car. i got a driving cycle from the dmv and the dealership and i have put over 2k miles on the car now so me and the guy at the dealership threw the idea of just driving the car out the window. my question is does it seem like any of the things the dealership is doing are the right things or am i just giving them money now? i tried to argue that i shouldn't have to pay since i payed them to fix the evap emission leak problem and the odb 2 ( or obd 2 not sure the right name of the machine is ) still says i have a small leak on the evap emission hose. here is the specs to my car just incase http://www.edmunds.com/used/2000/chrysler/300m/12444/specs.html any help will be greatly appreciated thanks

Welcome to Bitog, this thread should be moved to the Mechanical Maint Forum.

Did you check the gas cap? Are you over filling the gas tank? That will also trigger Evap Emission System Small Leak Code. Did they do a smoke test to check for leaks?

not sure if they did a smoke test on it i will ask when i go on tuesday. the car has been to the dealership about 5 times in the last 2 weeks about this problem. theres no problem in performace while im driving or nothing like that i just take it so they can try and pinpoint the problem. and no im not over filling the gas tank is always about 3/4 of the way filled. and about the gas cap dosen't seem to be anything wrong with it shuts tightly. i will go to a junk yard that i know has some 300m cars and get one from those and put it on my car to see what happens.

Tighten all clamps associated with the evap. system.
Mix dish washing liquid detergent with water and carefully
pour this over small areas of the system where you would expect a leak to occur.Carefully look for bubbles that indicate a leak.

Forget the Evap leak. You already spent way more that you should have trying to get it fixed. 60% of all CEL I see are evap codes. I wouldnt worry.

i wish i could forget that problem the only problem is that if i ever wanna sale the car it will not passed the smog test because of that problem. and like i said in my post i don't wanna test the car driving it from Las Vegas to San Diego with that steep hill that's like 6,000 feet in elevation with my check engine light on ( i think it is a canyon pass and not a hill )

It's only an emissions thing and will not leave you stranded. Basically your gas tank or associated system is slightly vented to air, so if you leave the car parked in the sun you might smell gas fumes. This is, however, not cool with the greenies, and it appears you live somewhere where you have to fix it.

To fix this properly, someone should plug a "smoke machine" into the gas filler and pump your tank up with a few PSI of smoke. Where the leak is will start smoking. The dealer that nicked you for $500 is incompetent and I would fight them for money back.

I agree with ejjefino, after checking the gas cap, and looking for obvious problems with hoses and connections a smoke test should have been done. That would find the leak! Sounds like they were milking the cash cow. I'd demand a refund! Then take it elsewhere where someone with a brain can check it out!

+1 I would add "crooked" to the accusation as well, especially if a refund isn't immediately forthcoming.

it was the chrysler dealership lol, i actually bumped into the guy that works at the dealership(the one helping me out) he said ( im not a specialist but i do know that they ran the smoke on it and that's how they found the leak the first time and after they replaced the hoses and checked it with smoke again they couldn't see any smoke so it could have been a very small leak that they couldn't see. So i told him so i shouldn't have to pay more for the job i payed u guys to fix that u haven't fixed yet right.... he said it couldn't be the hoses so they are just running down the list of things that could be it and replacing them until the problem is gone. he did say they will stop charging me $100 just to have them look at the car every time i take it in o.0

I had an evap leak code P0441 on my truck, it's a Dodge, not a Chrysler but still a Mopar. A new gas cap didn't fix it. I fixed a cracked evap hose end and the light was back on 2 days later. I replaced the evap emissions leak detection pump and all but one of the emissions hoses under the hood. That was over 2 months ago, and the CEL has not come back on since.

At this point I'd try a different dealer, its obvious the guys you're working with can't trouble shoot the problem. JMO
