If any of the Esso distributor morons are telling you that the 0w30 XD-3 is being discontinued, tell them to prove it because it was just released in March.

Lots of these guys like to blow smoke up your *** so you will buy their existing stock so they don't have to order in anything else.

That's what I thought too, it was just released! I'm going to go down there and ask again. If they still tell me the same BS, I'll try the dealer up in Yorkton.

Hello Pitzel, I was concerned about the thickness of this oil until I saw specs on this $4.00 a litre XD3 100% syn oil blowing away specs on Esso Superflo syn oil at $6.00 per litre. This XD3 has better flow cold, better 100C and 40C viscosity and 30% more TBN than Superflo. I feel ripped off using Superflo for years in the gas API format, this gas/diesel XD3 rules for gas engine in my opinion,I want to use it indefinately starting this fall on my Nissan. I will use the XD3 0-40 in my diesel. Thanks for tip on Moose Jaw Esso, I visit son and daughter in law occasionally in Regina, may stop in at Esso there on way.

I think LTblazer you mentioned this XD3 oil is now made by Mobil. I suspected that for one reason, how was Mobil going to sell bulk Mobil to Farmers, Ranchers etc who need large quantities. They will not buy Mobil for $7.00 - $8.00 per litre. I think Esso/Mobil is shrewd in their marketing, they sell to average Joes in Walmart at double price as Mobil and then bulk at $4.00 for bulk users. Great to be in the know on these deal though eh? I dont know what my 0-30 syn XD3 will be at my Esso Bulk but I doubt I will beat $3.64.

Thanks for tip on supply of 0-30 and ammo if Esso B--- S---'s me.

I got your name wrong in previous post BlazerLT, sorry bout that, getting late, mental errors, time to get some sleep, thanks again, Cyprs.

XD-3 is not just rebadged M1 though. There's a VOA on XD-3 0w40 here http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=11;t=000173

No moly, no boron and completely different numbers otherwise. It's also a heavy 30wt and Mobil usually formulates on the thin side. This could still be a Mobil product though, just a completely different formulation.

Olympic, be cool to do an oil anylisis on same engine on both 0-30 XD3 and Mobil counterpart and see which is better, thick or thin. I get my oil anaylis from Kramer in Regina for 16.00 kit. I hate prospect of paying $8.00 bucks litre for Mobil though. thanks,

I just got back from Yorkton, I picked up 8 4L jugs of 0w30 for $3.67/L!

That's even cheaper thant the Rotella T synthetic blend I used to buy for winter.

My 03 Vibe is due for an oil change so I'll throw some XD3 in there tonight and run it out to 15,000km and see what happens. So in a couple months I'll have an Amsoil vs M1 vs Esso UOA comparison. Should be interesting to see if you really do "get what you pay for".

The XD3 will get the real torture test though. I'm going to pull off the dual remote bypass system and just use an Amsoil SDF-15 in the stock location. I see no reason to use a 40,000km bypass filter for 15,000km OCI's. Hopefully insoluables and TBN stay in check. A $30 oil change that will go 15k would be sweet!

Gees I realy hope this stuff is as sweet as it looks on paper. Because the engine is running realy well with it and for the price, I know where to get realy good oil for cheep.. I mean who could ask for more. A full PAO oil for 4.00 dollars a bottle lol this is great.

Olympic, I will do an analysis on this 0-30 XD3 on my Nissan and post it in early spring, also I am posting 4 analysis this spring for my 92 cummins on 4 OCI too: Walmart semisyn 15-40, Duron dino 15-40, XD3 15-40 dino (currently in my diesel) and 0-40 XD syn which I will use this winter. I hope Kramer does a gas engine analysis, have to find out. Looking forward to your posts on analysis.

Didn't get chance to price this XD3 today, I now know I should be around 3.70 range for comparison.

I was born in Yorkton, haven't been in that country for years, I miss it, I hear the crops smell ransid from highways due to rain and rot, too bad, most years they get crops off in time. Friends in Esterhazy tell me it is tough year, lots rain, too much, and frost.

Rick, what are you running this XD3 in? Is it quieting the engine down? I am looking forward to trying it too at end of this month, good deal.

A word on *Esso*, out here is S.W. Sask., Esso had made a screw up with their diesel, this raised havoc with Farmers' pumps. Esso replaced diesel pumps for every claimant, no questions asked, guys tell my fellas were getting pumps who did not use one litre Esso diesel, that is a company I like to buy my oil from, full back up and as you say, price can't be beat.

I'm running it in my 90 2.0L sunbird. I was running 0W-20 mobil 1 bad idea, turn out to be to noisy and the plug magnet had more metal on it then I was comfortable with. Even my gf noticed the engine quiater with this stuff and I hadn't even told her I changed the oil to this stuff. So big difference. Especially when your gf notices.

Also, the bottle says, 'Made in Canada' on the XD-3 Extra 0W30, but the Mobil-1 specifies 'Made in the USA, Packaged in Canada'.

Definitely would be great to see some UOA's on this stuff. I will only be change oil every 1-1.5 years with this stuff (don't drive much), and have 108k km's on 80k km spark plugs (will change soon), so I don't think I'd be a very good candidate for producing representative UOA numbers.

So has anyone requested the Esso guide to extending oil drains from their Esso rep, as is indicated in the pdf spec sheet referenced in the URL at the top of this thread?

Of course, it will undoubtedely recommend extended drains only when supported by a proper UOA program, but it would be interesting to see if the literature is fundamentally different than what AMSOIL et al specify. Many of the contemporary recommendations, for example, against extending drains of Mobil1 come from Mobil itself, even though UOA shows that Mobil1 is rarely 'due' for a change at the manufacturer's recomended intervals.

I'm actually hoping this oil will shear down slightly. It's right at the top of the 30wt range out of the bottle.

I had a bit of a screw-up when I went to install the XD3 tonight. I drained the oil, took the Amsoil DR bypass off and then discovered that the SDF-15 filter won't fit. The threads are correct but it's too big around and won't clear the oil pan. So now the car will have to sit overnight until I can get the proper filter in the morning.

And just FYI, the XD3 0w40 is on sale for 30 cents a liter off.

Umm.. my link is an UOA of the XD-3 0w40

I've seen UOA's from the 6.0 PSD where it sheared even the might Delvac 1.

Olympic, are you talking about the 0w30 when you hope it shears? The 0w40 is a very thich 40 weight.

since honda is now recommending a 10000mile/1yr OCI, WITH DINO!!!, I have absolutely no fear of doing 1X/year oil changes with M1 or XD-3.
I'm still chicken though, I change the oil 2X a year, when I'm changing back and forth the snow tires and wheels.
