According to a rep from Eneos USA that posted here some time ago, their "Synthetic" oils are predominately Group III and their "Fully Synthetic" oils are predominately Group IV and/or V.

They only have 5 oil weights for the US market.

Group IV

0W-20
5W-20
5W-40
0W-50

Group III

5w30

Their 5w30 is the only bottle that just says Synthetic. All the others say Fully Synthetic, including their 0W-20.

ENEOS SUSTINA
by ENEOS Motor Oil on Friday, November 12, 2010 at 10:55am

At the SEMA show in Las Vegas on November 2, 2010, Nippon Oil (USA) Ltd. officially announced a new product line for the US market to be sold under the ENEOS brand name: SUSTINA. This is a very exciting new product that has launched in Japan as of November 1, 2010, and will officially launch in the US in early 2011.

The ENEOS team is very excited about the SUSTINA product due its new proprietary technologies developed in-house by JX Nippon Oil and Energy Corporation. These include a new synthetic base stock called WBase and a new sulfur-free anti-wear additive chemistry that promotes longer life of detergents, keeping your engine cleaner, longer.

At the heart of SUSTINA is the WBase technology. This new synthetic base oil is a Gas-to-Liquid Equivalent (GTLE), and was engineered to give the oil higher fluidity. Traditional synthetic base oils consist of hydrogen-carbon molecules which contain ring structures. These structures can often collide and intertwine with each other, slowing oil movement, especially at cold temperatures. WBase technology realigns the hydrogen-carbon chain into a structure that is more or less completely straight, allowing freer movement of the oil molecules and providing lower engine drag and improved fuel efficiency and power.

How does WBase compare to PAO? Like PAO, WBase is a high-performance synthetic base oil. In comparison, though, WBase has a higher Viscosity Index (VI) – when considering 4cSt base stocks, PAO has a VI of 124, while WBase has a VI of 140. This translates to higher stability across broader viscosity ranges, while requiring smaller amounts of VI Improver.

In addition to WBase, JX Nippon Oil and Energy has developed a new anti-wear additive chemistry. Most engine oils today utilize zinc, sulfur, and phosphorus in their anti-wear additives, but sulfur can negatively impact the cleanliness of an engine. This is because Sulfur, when exposed to oxygen, moisture, and heat, can form harmful acids that attack the detergents in the oil. Once all of the detergents are destroyed by the acids, the oil can no longer perform one of its primary functions – keeping dirt and contaminants in suspension. The industry-wide response to this is to have a high TBN in order to neutralize the acids, but this is only effective to a point.

Pistons used in testing to compare Sustina, GF-4, and GF-5 oils

The ZP additive chemistry found in SUSTINA provides superior anti-wear protection, but without the use of sulfur. By eliminating sulfur, the formation of harmful acids is greatly reduced and the need for a high TBN is diminished. Therefore, the detergents used in SUSTINA have a much longer life, up to twice as long as those found in other fuel-conserving ILSAC GF-4 and GF-5 licensed engine oils.

Once SUSTINA launches in the US, it will be available in 6/1 quart cases in 0W-20 and 0W-50 grades, with other grades and package sizes being made available in the future.

I was especially intrigued by this:

Just went to the Eneos website and found this:

ENEOS SUSTINA is the new line of premium motor oil created by JX Nippon Oil & Energy.

Sustina is made with Nippon Oil's proprietary W BASE technology, producing extremely high VI (viscosity index) synthetic base oil that maintains a very stable oil viscosity over a wide temperature range. This technology allows SUSTINA to remain very fluid at cold temperatures, reducing internal engine drag and improving fuel economy up to 2% compared to currently available fuel conserving GF-4 oils of the same viscosity.

SUSTINA also utilizes the sulfur-free characteristics of ZP additive chemistry, reducing the formation of detergent destroying sulfuric acid, keeping your engine cleaner and running longer.

AVAILABLE IN 5w30, 0W-20, AND 0W-50 VISCOSITY GRADES BEGINNING APRIL OF 2011.

I can imagine that this April date might very well not be met given Japan's huge difficulties.

I'm not sure if the Japan disaster will affect the release of this product. The Non-Sustina bottles say Alabama. Come to find out... their main blending facility is in AL.

I think this product sounds very interesting. I'm interested in seeing the price tag.

I had been "eyeing" this oil since I heard about it. Got my curiosity up so I just called...It's being packaged now and should be available through normal channels "At the end of this month" (March 2011)...slightly ahead of schedule it looks like.

I'm hoping that Amazon will continue to sell Eneos. A lot of the products have disappeared off the site. Maybe because of repackaging, or maybe it's because Amazon was selling for such a good price that it was hurting speed shops and other dealers.

The 5w30 from their regular line was just reformulated to be Fully Synthetic. VI is 177.

They recently reformulated the 5w30. I'm not sure if it was for quality issues, or maybe something else. The 5w30 was the only SynBlend in their product line. It's now been converted to 100% synthetic

Sounds interesting and I'm sure it will be a good product.
I will add though you can get PAO's with VI's as high as 200 if the formulator wants to pay the price. What they wind up using is of course proprietary.

The bottom line is that this premium oil will undoubtedly be premium priced. In Canada, even the regular GP III based ENEOS 0W-20 is an outrageous 13 bucks a litre. I shudder to think what they will be pricing Sustina at.

I just check Amazon and it looks like all Eneos grades are in stock. I wonder what took so long. I ordered 1qt of 5w30 just to make sure it's the fully synthetic version and not the old Syblend version.

Hopefully Sustina will be added to Amazon in the next few weeks.

Not sure what the Sustina price is, but if you search "Eneos" on amazon it will show you the prices of the current oils.

Amazon should in theory sell Sustina since they're all ready selling all other Eneos products.
