Does anyone still have these in operation by you? There is one about 17 miles SE from home that we've been to once, and one 45 miles West from home which I've never been to. The closer one has Cars playing right now, but if Superman comes to it, I'll be in a dilemma, as I won't know if I should depend on the normal theatre's AC, or go to the drive in.

there are two in memphis, TN run by malco theatres. one of them you pay 6 bucks a person and you get to watch two new release movies in a row. for example, Mission impossible 3 and X men 3.

There is still one left near me, it's about 20min away. There used to be two others near here too, but one is now a big multiplex and the other was torn down to make more houses.

There's one over in Belmont. Took the wife over last weekend. 2 chaise lounges in the back of the pickup and a cooler of beverages, backed into the stall and had a great evening.

Drive-ins are becoming more popular, atleast in the Southeast. I only knew of one about 11 years ago, there are 5 within an hour of my house now.

"relying on the theater's AC".....

LOL....

It must have been 82 degrees inside the theater yesterday by the time the movie 'Cars' was over. Atleast at a drive in I could have had the car's AC running.

I used to be a projectionist at our local dive-in while in high school. I have to say those were some of the best days of my life!

Now it's long gone...the shack turned into a hay barn...seems almost sacreligious.

I believe the Wyoming drive-in is the only one still in operation in the Detroit area. The Compuware Center in Plymouth has sporadic drive-in showings catering to families.

Do they transmit their sound on radio? Most of them do now and sometimes you can get the signal well out of the drive in.

Hmmmm, haven't that about the radio thing. However, I've been through their on my dirt bike and they still use those speakers that you attach to your window. Remember, this is in Chickasha Oklahoma, no high tech stuff here!!!

That's a plus for Chickasha

, the reason the rest of the country started using radio is because people took the speakers home.

And a decent car radio sounds better than drive-in speaker

Just opened a new drive-in in Midland, TX a few months back. FM reception, 2 movies for $5 a head, starts at sundown. It's hot but it's a dry heat

I think this idea should come back!! Heck, it seems that every town around here had their own drive-in way back when! I loved sitting in the back of my parents car and watching movies when I was a kid!

We have a couple here. They should park SUVs on one side of the aisle and cars on the other. You can tell the yuppie idiots who don't know their cars' automatic headlights as they fiddle the ignition for the accessory position to power the radio.

We still have speaker poles and the occasional speaker box that no longer functions. Ripping them out would cost money and they help line the cars up properly.

IMO they should give discounts if you show up in a cool classic car.

I've even been to flea markets at one drive in during the day...
