Does anybody run 10W-40 Anymore?

I'll be running 10W-40 MaxLife this summer (but only because my PepBoys was out of the 10w30).

Otherwise, I'm not a huge fan when not specifically called for...

Schaeffers 15w40 really runs out lower like a 10w-40 and its got full ratings,just a really good engine oil for many apps,also the 5w-40 9000 ,all are diesel and gas approved,and are long distance oils,these oils can really take a beating,and to add will improve oil consumption in older engines through a superior add pac and bases.BL

I use Amsoil 10W40 in my Jeep (105K), wifes Dodge Shadow (137K), and my Honda VFR Intercepter motorcycle (13K). My 1 ton 460cu Ford van (128K) I use a brew of Rotella T 5W40 and 15W40 (50/50 mix) to make a 10W40 blend. So far I am happy with the results with the oils I use.

I generally mix 5w30 and 10W-40 dino in the 1996 Audi 2.8, adjusting the ratio a bit according to ambient temperature / season of the year.

brian, agree on the diesel dino like Schaeffers 15-40 and 5-30 car oil is good stuff. In fact if stupid walley world keeps pulling my favorite oils out of stock their will soon come a day that they will not be the featured supplier of my garage stash and increasingly Schaeffers will take over. Now what to do about good low cost filters since stupid walley world is reducing ST filters around here?

I run dino 10w-40 in Euro cars that ~should~ use synth 5w-40. Usually Havoline, but I'd consider GTX....but Syntec Blend 10w-40 runs nice. 10w-40 will run in cold and hot temps...a somewhat overlooked visc for Euro cars. I think atthe 4 month/6000mi intervals I do, it's prefect.

BTW- DuraBlend 10w-40 carried the ACEA A3-spec, interesting in it's price range.

I am currently running 10w40 pennzoil dino in my 95 bmw 525i as part of the second clean/rinse phase with Auto-RX. However, I plan to go to a 5w40 or 5w50 synthetic when the process is complete. My owner's manual and local bmw mechanics recommend fairly heavy oil.

I previously used Mobil 1 0w40 synthetic and did not get good UOA and the engine made more noise at idle and while revving. It just did not seem as smooth.

Hello,

I'm running Motul 300v 10w40.

Why ? Because Toyota decided that this was the oil grade I have to use in average italian temps, according to the oil tolerance/oil pump characteristics of my engine...

An given that when I rebuilt it, I maintained Toyota's oil toleraces, I still use a 10w40...

Over that, I use a Motul 300v because I use it in track and I needed an high HTHS oil.

Check your manual, page 130. Read the second paragraph from the bottom. It's printed bold. Also, look at the oil chart. Again, 5w30 and 10W-40 mineral oils are allowed only at ambient temps up to 59 F in the 12v.

I heard about the bad reputation of dino 10W40 way before I found BITOG. Why would I put it in my car if it isn't even good enough to run in a lawnmower?

10W30 has never caused a problem for me, I have use it in my newer vehicles exclusively until a recent experement with GC 0W30.

For the older cars run in the summer I use diesel rated 15W40.

I run 10w-40 in my 91 Mazda RX7 Convertible in the summer and 5w-40 in winters.

I must confess this site (specifically the rebates forum) has corrupted me. Now half my stash in non Valvoline deals and at this time I don't even have Maxlife in any of three vehicles, a lawnmower, or a generator. I feel ashamed

Well, my dad and I have been running 10W40 for years in our VW's and Audi's with no problem. I don't see anything wrong with this grade, especially in the midwest (OH and IN).

A buddy of mine runs it in his Tacoma for three reasons: it sees heavy use as a "maintenance guy" vehicle, in muggy Georgia summers the heat index is frequently well over 100, and he trailers his motorcycle to races.

I will be running it in a 1996 Bmw M44 engine for the clean and rinse cycles of an Ar-x treatment. Havoline brand from wally world.

10w-40 dino is underrated, imo. I read a lot of UOAs before using it...they all looked good. Syntec Blend 10w-40...what's wrong with that???

I put 10w-40 in when the sunfire burns oil on the interstate driving; change with 10w30; top off with 10w-40 same oil brand
