They ported some of their autobody tech to the dental field. I have a zirconia crown on one of my teeth - my dentist used 3M's impression material and it was dispensed just like their autobody filler/repair materials.
Yeah kind of weird huh? I had a crown made a few months back.

3M = Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company, many people are unaware of what 3M means.

They are now in serious trouble, as a judge denied bankruptcy shielding as a way to mitigate the earplug claims, and they must deal with the nearly 1/4 million personal injury lawsuits. All of 'em are earplug claims. Unfortunately, it's well within the realm of possibility this will shut the company down.

It's possible each of the 230,000 "victims" will be awarded $300,000. As of yesterday, things don't look good.

I'm constantly amazed by the quality of anything I use made by the company 3M. Be it earmuffs, adhesives, etc... all always seem to be top-notch quality at a reasonable price.

Have you encountered anything made by 3M that was NOT so good?

Their auto body waxes and buffing compounds are just **ok**. For the price there are WAY better quality products. But most things they sell im in complete agreement.

Some of their paint polishes and waxes are pretty meh. I know they have better stuff for commercial use in body shops but I'd rather buy Mother's or Meguiars.
3M bought Meguirs in 2008.

I used some 3M masking tape that tore very easily and was a nightmare to unroll. Yes, 3M stuff is generally very good. I love VHB tape.

They often have a full range of products in different price ranges. I used an older roll of Tartan brand electrical tape. Not even sure that 3M makes it, but it's labelled as made in Taiwan. It's OK, but Super 33+ stays put so much better.

Lately for some special work I've been using #69 glass fiber electric tape.

The stuff is amazing. It's tough(the place I'm using it requires abrasion resistance, so that's important) and is thinner and lighter than vinyl electrical tape. The adhesive on it is unlike any tape I've ever used. They describe it as "pressure activate." It comes off the roll super easily and is barely tacky. Once it's stuck, though, it's there, but amazingly enough if you(intentionally) peel it off there's no residue left behind. Even better, the adhesive holds up to far higher temperatures than it will ever see in my application(I think it's rated to a couple hundred degrees celcius?). It's not cheap, but then it also goes a long way as I don't feel the need to double or triple wrap for insurance as I would with vinyl tape.

Vinyl electrical tape often leaves a gooey mess behind, although even in that area I've started paying more for 3M brand tape. It's less messy than the others, seems to stick better, and IMO is easier to cut than a lot of less expensive brands.

In general, it seems to me that if involves adhesives, 3M more likely than not makes the among the best if not the best in the category. That's especially true of tapes

Been using 3M body shop supplies for > 40 years I don't recall a bad experience with any of their products.
