Do you torque your oil filter?

The only filter I've had leak was a Purolator, that I tightened about 3/4 to 1 turn after contact. I tightened it more after it leaked...it leaked worse. Took it off. Just a bad gasket, not a condemnation of Purolator...it can happen to any filter manufacturer, I'd guess.

I have always tightened conventional oil filters by hand. I have never had one leak or get stuck unless someone else installed the filter. One of my cars has an oil filter with a threaded aluminum housing that goes over a replaceable filter cartridge. It takes a 3/8" ratchet with a replaceable oring gasket; no problem hand tightening that either.

Two grunts while turning with your left hand at an awkward angle reaching down past the still hot intake manifold.

They say suffering builds character.

My wife appears to think that anything I do for her has no value unless suffering and sacrifice is involved.

Hand tighten until very snug and then back off just a bit.

First I've heard this. What's the logic/science here?

It's a habit I developed changing the filter on my 96 Isuzu Oasis. The filter is at an awkward angle making difficult to reach unless the vehicle is elevated. By doing this it allows me to remove it by hand without raising the vehicle. It works just fine for me, and I've never had a problem with leaks. There is sweet spot, sort of, between being just tight enough and too tight. The filter always seems more difficult to remove at the end of the interval as if it tightens up a bit.

I will say that the OEM filter on my 07 Odyssey was on so tight that I didn't think I'd ever get that thing off. It did not need to be on so tight. Even with filter pliers it was very difficult to remove.

Thanks.

Yep, BTDT. Try the ATF fill plug! I think the women on the line in Alabama are VERY STRONG!! (Although I'm not sure where the filter is put on or the transmission is built)

We have a 2006 Accord. Honda does, in fact, specify an oil filter torque in the factory service manual: 12 N-m (8.7 lbf-ft); I have the relevant page open in front of me. Curiously, they also say to go 3/4 of a turn past gasket contact.

And, yeah, the factory filter was on there ungodly tight. I couldn't budge it barehanded, and this shot glass-size filter was too small for any filter wrenches in my arsenal (and access with a strap-style filter wrench looked questionable anyway). I bought a metal cap-style socket, and it kept slipping.

Wound up buying a plastic cap-style socket, which just fit better and didn't deform around the bumps on the filter when I tried to turn it. Dayum, that thing was on there, but I finally got it off....

I turn the filter till the gasket seats then a bit more. When my arm tells me to stop is when its on right. I never have to use to hands to take it off or a filter wrench. I have never had a leak or mia filter.
