We ordered Chinese food from a local restaraunt and I went to pick it up.

I paid by credit card and there's the "tip" section.

Do you normally tip in this case? I gave a dollar b/c it's Christmas but other than that I don't think tipping is necessary when you're just picking up, is it?

I normally do at my local Chinese & Mexican places. Most of the wait staff in these places are immigrants, and they work their butts off. So, I tip on take-out orders.

When picking up pizza, however; No tip for you! Mostly teenage American kids working the pizza joints. They couldn't care less if I get my order in a timely manner. No tip for that.

Any place I regularly pickup prepared food, I tip. I figure it's good insurance that they will make sure your food is right.

As a former regular at the local Chinese outfit, I'd often dismiss the coin change from picking up our order. Just whatever it happened to be at the time. The owner (main wok master) just would throw it back in the drawer and nod thanks. Apparently it messed up his end of night tally enough that he put the cup out. I guess it stopped arguments about how much tip money there really was at the end of the night.

Why does Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts even have a tip jar at the register ???

Its not like they are doing anything special. I do tip the bagboy at the supermarket when he wheels my groceries out to my car.

True, but if there is a tip jar/cup..I'll put something in it.

Generally I'll tip. Learned long time ago, and mainly as a result of getting food from these places while on duty, that it pays to show some appreciation. Doesn't have to be much. Like GA said, just the left over change is fine most times. When I received any meals/coffee gratis or discounted, I would always tip off of what the full amount would be. If they were insistant about not taking it by hand, it would go in the tip jar or the charity container on the counter. Plus it generally feels good to give, even if that small amount. I consider it my "paying it forward" for the grace of abundance given to me.

I was just thinking about this as I picked up some Thai food about 10 mins ago. (Som Sak French Thai Cuisine..soooo good) I do not leave a tip when picking up take out but I might start to. I always give 20% at restaurants, some times 15% depending on the service.

What does "The Critic" tip?

A nickel?

Never get take out. Wouldn't tip if I did. Rather leave larger than average tip for good service than leave a penny tail up to indicate poor service, which I have done on a few occasions.

Don't tip for take-out.

Or for self-service buffets. I'm already paying for the food and drinks, and then getting my own food and drinks, so why on earth would I tip them? For letting me use their tables and silverware?

To me, tipping is for personal services rendered.
