Do you turn off your A/C when you shut down your engine or just leave it "on" all the time in hot weather? Want to make sure I don't harm the compressor.

I'm not sure if it does harm to leave it on, but I turn mine off before I shut the car off. I turn it back on when I start the car.

On my old Cavalier 2.2L I did, or it would shoot up over 1000RPM as soon as it started.
My Vic does that anyway, so I just leave the temperature control on automatic.

On pretty much every car made since the 80s the compressor is turned on and off by the computer. Mine waits a few seconds after I start it to kick in and it disengaes the second you turn the key to off.

If I remember, I'll switch mine off a couple of minutes before reaching home, just to avoid a puddle of water on the garage floor.

When my sister moved to Phoneix from WI, people there told her that starting her car with the A/C on was hard on the engine.

I had a decent chuckle wondering what they'd think when I fire it up at -10 outside?

In the Accord, there is a few second delay before it kicks on. I'm sure this is more common than I know.

I SHUT EVERYTHING off every time I get out, not just the AC, but also the fan, radio, and unplug anything in ports. Also, I let the fuel pump prime/cycle before I start it, It's a habit or ritual I cant help now, even in a hurry.

I asked the very same question on BITOG about 4 years ago and the consensus was that it does no harm to leave the AC on when starting the car. I've been doing it with no ill effects.

i shut mine off and let the fan blow thru the vent system. in the past, previous cars, the vent system would smell like b.o. when the bacteria/mildew built up the dampness.

Ha, you are just like me, I do the exact thing too!

Sounds like one more way to waste time doing more harm than good.

I do the same when I remember, figuring that the least amount of condensed water in there, the less possible corrosion.

Sometimes it is just too uncomfortable to do so though... A bit of extra load just after startup may be good for stabilization of idle and faster warm-up.

I try to shut the air off. If I don't then there will be a hissing sound under the hood right after shutting down the engine. Then if I reach back in and turn the air switch to the off position, the hissing stops.

On the Saturn, the entier system runs constantly including the cooling fan. Sorta strange, but that's how it is on my 96 anyways.
