Did GM solve the issue of coming in their DI engines? If so, when ? If not, I heard that a catch can on the intake (?) solves the problem. Is that correct?

For the 3.6L they did. For the 2018 LGX & LGZ engines, GM has designed an oil separating baffle unit that sits on the top of the V6 between the cylinders, like where a pushrod cam shaft would be. The box has a check valve to prevent back flow.
Unless people have shown at the intake valve, that a catch can solves the intake valve buildup, it's more for thinking you'll sleep better at night... because the pro-catch can people say: "Look at the crap inside the catch can!!!!!" and claims it prevents the intake valve buildup.
It's more due to the variable valve timing system, mimicing an EGR with valve overlap.
