For engines over 100,000 miles, which of these would you recommend?

1. Dino Oil
2. Synthetic Blend
3. Synthetic

What are your reasons for your recommendation? Is there a particular brand that's clearly better than another? FYI - I live in a Kansas City suburb (if that makes a difference in which to use).

Thanks!

What have you used so far?

I currently use a blend by Schaeffers for my truck and full synthetic in the transmission (amsoil). But my truck tows a trailer in the heat of the summer and I am doing extended drain intervals. Our minivan uses motorcraft, which is blended and has been in great shape.

I think any good formulated dino would work. It is mostly personal preference.

My old '96 Audi S6 2.2 Q Turbo has just done 100,000 miles and has always used synthetic. This winter it's SLX 0W-30. Before M1 0W-40 or other easy to find VW502.00 synthetic oils.

My recommendation:
3. Synthetic (or switch to synthetic).

I think it depends on how long you expect to keep the car and how important its performance as it gets old is to you. Dino oil works great for 3000 mile changes if you do an auto-rx fairly often. Synthetic works great for 6000 to 7500 mile changes. It keeps the engine cleaner longer but still may require auto-rx about every 100,000 or so. The blends fall in between and I have never used them so little experience there. My autos usually go 250-300 thousand miles before I replace them. Synthetic seems to work best for me and that is what I use in all mine except for the TR3. It is to old to switch from what has been used for 30 years Castrol GTX.

Depends on so many things...How much are you willing to spend? What are your normal driving conditions? What kind of engine do you have? What shape if your engine in? Will you be doing the oil changes yourself or have a shop/mechanic do them?

You missed the most important one.

4. High Mileage

I recommend either Castrol or Pennzoil.

KC,

For top shelf dino, Chevron/Texaco Havoline, Pennzoil, or Castrol GTX.

For synblend, Schaeffer is the best by far. It has the best additive package of any oil on the market. A great bang for the $$$.

Synthetic is a tougher call. It depends on the vehicle/engine. A year ago I would have said Amsoil but the newer formulations are thinner in the xw-30 category. The line between Amsoil and Mobil 1 is blurred. That being said, the diesel rated S3K 5w30 is probaly one of the best oils on the market and definately Amsoil's best offering. Their 15w40 oil is not shabby either.

Wow! Lots of good thoughts here. Let me try to answer some of the questions . . .

1. I've used Castrol GTX in one engine (1994 Olds Cutlass Supreme 3.1 L starting at 65,000 and now has 176,000 miles) and Castrol Syntec Blend in the other (1999 Suburban 5.7 L starting at 34,000 and now has 102,000 miles).

2. I hope to get at least 250,000 out of each of them.

3. Performance is important to me. The longer I can keep them running in the best shape possible, the better off we are.

4. Normal driving conditions . . . split between start-and-stop driving as well as highway miles.

5. Not sure how to answer about the shape of the engines. Neither appear to be burning any oil that I can tell.

6. All oil changes performed by yours truly!

7. Cost isn't a major concern for me . . . I'm more interested in doing what's best for both of our vehicles.

Can anyone tell me more about Schaeffer? I'm not familiar with that line.

KC:

Look through the "Support Our Sponsors" forum. There you will see we have a Schaeffers representative whom you can contact about prices of their very fine products.

I've used some of them and they are very good products.

KC,
I recently bought a case of 5w40 in gallons from salesrep. It came in at just under $4 a qt total cost. Can't beat that with a stick!

I use it in my 20k a year gas truck.

It seems to me that a thorough look through the UOAs posted on this site reveals not one whit of an advantage to using synthetics over a good dino in most cases. I would use a synthetic only if one of the following is true:

- You intend to extend drain intervals beyond 7500 miles.

- The engine has known issues with overheating of the oil, for example an air cooled motorcycle engine.

- The engine has known oiling system weaknesses or sludging problems.

- You expect to encounter extremely broad temperature ranges on a single fill.

- The manufacturer of the vehicle recommends synthetic.

Even in most of the above conditions a good argument could be made for dino, based on results posted on this site. Most modern engines are good, healthy designs and will not be subject to any of the above.

Plenty of people here have run engines several hundred thousand miles on dino without even the benefit of A-RX cleanings.

This is coming from a former confirmed advocate of synth, and I attempt to maintain my vehicles for maximum lifespan. In my humble opinion, most people are better off using dino with 5k-or-so OCIs and putting the savings into other aspects of preventive maintenance, possibly including occasional Auto-RX treatments, and more importantly making sure the car's body, interior and subsystems last as long as the engine will.

My humble opinion.

Oh I forgot to mention that a good use of that saved money would be an occasional used oil analysis. This will help ensure that you are using an oil that works well with the engine, that your OCIs are appropriate, and that there are no mechanical/contamination issues that might shorten engine life.

KC,
Schaeffer's oil has been made in St.Louis Mo since 1839. I buy Schaeffers 10W30 synblend in 5 gallon buckets and have it delivered to my door.
This oil will really go the distance and only cost me the last time about $3 a quart. Not that I recommending this to you, each car is different but with oil analysis done every oil change I go 9,000 between oil changes, my co-worker goes 15K.

I think the best synblend on the market today is the Motorcraft line. Under two dollars a quart, available nearly everywhere and an all around great oil.
