Hello all. I have a '71 VW Bus, stock sized engine, 7qt oil system. I am running a Purolator L39001 for the full flow and a Baldwin B164 for the by-pass. The 1/2" hose for the full flow is Thoro-Flo Series 7101. The 1/4" hose for the by-pass was the Parker 801-4. Engines been together with this set-up for poss 4 years with zero issues. So, that's the basics.
I planned to replace these hoses during my upcoming oil change and bought replacements at a local aero-surplus outlet here in Burbank. The 1/4" hose supplied to me had no markings on it at all but trusted the stores endorsement that it was an oil hose. Replaced the 2 filters and hoses without incident. Oil is Delo 15w40.
Within 5 miles I noticed a huge oil puddle on my landlords asphalt drive. The by-pass return is plumbed into the bottom of my 1 1/2qt sump with a 1/4"barb fitting. My standard hose clamp had cut into this hose and allowed over 4qts to leak out. I confronted the store about the unmarked hose and they stated it was oil hose but would not tell me its source. I looked at the hose and it had no inner lining. It was sold to me for $2.50/ foot. I found the Parker distributor and bought the 801-4 for $1.82/ foot. I installed the Parker hose, checked my strainer plate for metal (none), and refilled the engine and have had no issues with hoses.
Does anyone know if oil hose exists that is not marked and no inner lining to reinforce it?
Any tips on asphalt driveway cleaning? Used laundry det initially and then a special purpose driveway cleaner from Purple Power, with minimum improvement.
Thanks in advance, Bill.

I think your fine, nice sump set up. You did not mention if the hose was determined to have failed?
1. Did you inspect this Hose?
2. Was it just your hose clamp?
There isn't quite enough info here to determine if you truly "Screwed up"??

Thanks for the reply's. I will try the brake cleaner on a small spot and see what happens.
I have replaced both sections of the 1/4" hose. I will razor blade cut the hose open and look along its length to see if anything is suspect. At this particular barb the area that "seemed to be cut" is just beyond the clamps band where the barb is its largest dia. The hose is so easy to squeeze/pinch compared to the parker hose. When I confronted the store owner, obviously I was ticked off and asked if this hose was from China, which he denied but would not let me see the spool it came off.

Sounds like they gave you PCV hose or fuel line (probably not even fuel-injection rated line, at that). It amazes me how many auto parts places seem to think all black hoses are created equal- fuel, vacuum, PCV, ATF, PS return- they use them interchangeably. I want to see a hose specifically labelled for the application.

If it unmarked hose..then it is some sort of general purpose made in China cheap hose.

All the quality hose companies mark the outside of the hoses with some specs, model of hose and other information. You probably noticed the Parker hose was well documented on the outside.

Oil stains...brake clean and about a month of rainy weather will help.

Nice set-up on your old air cooled VW..the big oil capacity will help those old VWs live a long time.
