Hello there!

Just changed my oil today, and decided to cut open the XG4967 that I took off, to see how much stuff was caught in there. First impression of the insides: this filter is heavy duty! It took allot of effort to separate the end caps from the media! Also, the metal screen was quite rigid , even though there was a metal center tube. Only downside was how small the filter was. Though there was decent surface area, I would still like more.

Car is the one in my sig, and as you will see, this was the silver can XG, but it was replaced with the current golden can.
Anyways, here are the pics! Enjoy!

Oh and the filter was in use for 10,000km / 6250 miles, with PP as the fill

The media appears to be small. I'm concerned that some of the downsized Motorcraft filters may be similarly small. I don't think I would push these smaller filters beyond 5K-7K OCIs.

LOL! Great filter, Great oil, you have got a good thing going! Keep it up and thank you for the pics.

PS:Really, how did you cut that filter?? hammer and chisel?

Hahaha!! Oh these comments just made my day!

But i actually punched a screw driver around it about every half inch, then twisted to inlarge the hole, then played connect the dots with tin snips. Haha you can see the tin snips in the corner of the last pic

But as for the smallness of the filter, I still feel very confident about using it for extended drains now that I've cut this open, there was no visible debris between the pleats, so I doubt plugging will be an issue. I will use the current gold xg for 15,000km this time, 2 runs of 7500.

But does anybody know if there is an oversize xg for my application?? If so, what's the product code??

Did the metal screen do a good job of preventing the filtration media from deforming? I've thought about getting an XG in the past, but couldn't get over my mistrust of Fram...

thx for the pics. Good to see the older silver ones seem to be just as good. I got a small stash of the silver XGs from rockauto that was on sale for 4 something.

maybe a wix #51348 (XG3614) would depend if you have a little wiggle room gasket wise on your filter base. the ID of 51348 is the same as the OD of your current filter. other than that they are they same (thread, flow, bypass setting, adbv)

51348 ----------------------- gasket OD:2.73 ID:2.43
51394 (your current filter) - gasket OD:2.47 ID:2.17

were talking 3 tenths of an inch. you most likely do. But it is best to double check with your own peepers to make sure.

Holy, that's an amazing price!! Up here I paid about $12 for that can! price is the same now with the gold cans though. Wish I could find that kind of deal!

It really did do an amazing job! the media wasn't wavy in any way, and the spacing was even all the way around, besides the slightly different gap at the seam. And honestly, trying to separate the media from end caps was a real chore! the screen did its job and more. And I too have that same distrust for most fram cans, but I am actually recommending this one now!

Thank you very much! I wish I had seen the inside of this filter before purchasing another, as I would have liked the oversize filter better. But I will give the 3614 a try, maybe I'll buy an OCOD just to test fit the size, because there is no way im going to chuck the XG early, small or not! =P

It may be small, but its a beast!

Oh and side note, I installed a magnetic drain plug this OCI, I'll be taking pics and giving my thoughts on it at the end of the OCI. Hopefully it does its job
=)

The pleats look filled, to me anyway, at 6k. The xg4386 filter is a longer version, might want to check into those and see if OK for your car. They are spec'd for the later 4cyl camry. They are pretty much identical except one is longer. Toyota TRD is another fine looking filter in this price range.

Does it really?? Maybe that's the picture being a little deceiving, but in person I couldn't physically see any grit anywhere in the media. It was just really black.

The XG filters have kind of a thick "fuzzy" media ... so when it's soaked with oil it looks like it does in those photos.

Oh yeah they do look sludgy in the pics! But yeah it's just the fuzzy material soaked in oil, I ran my fingers through the media allot while trying to separate the end caps from it, there was no visible sludge or grit but I could feel some small particles. Nothing to worry about I'm sure

Which I'm very glad for, as this engine is a 'known sludger'
=)

Having proven to myself that I have a clean engine is relieving, and I probably wont be cutting any filters open for a while now... Unless I run a flush or cleaning product that is... But that's for another time

Anyways thanks for the comments, and I hope this helped people using the xg or plan to, it's a very good filter! And there should be no worries running it to the milage they recommend!

I just put one of these on my vehicle (actually it was the Fram 'Synthetic' filter, which I think is what Fram calls the Xtended Guard up here in Canada).

The box said 'new, 2 ply' - I don't know if this is a difference between the 'Synthetic' filter and the 'Xtended Guard' or if it's just marketing (I don't see the 'Synthetic' model listed at the US Fram site).
