Gentleman. My younger daughter just purchased a VERY low mileage and pristine 2000 Mustang GT convertible. She wants to maintain this vehicle in a collector condition. It will be driven minimally once a month (enough to bring the vitals up to temperature). What motor oil would you suggest for a yearly (or more) OCI? Best regards. John---Las Vegas.

I am trying to understand the logic of maintaining a car in pristine condition and using the cheapest oil one can find. Just does not compute for me. I would use a top of the line synthetic like mobil 1, Amsoil etc. I know your engine will be cleaner from my own experience with both regular cheap oil and mobil 1.

By driving the vehicle minimally and expecting to get it fully up to temp once a month, you're talking about a 50 mile run or so, preferably at highway speeds.

As to oil choice, I'm with LT4, except I'd change it twice a year. Also, I'd keep the gas tank chock full between runs, and change the balance of all fluids at least every other year (brake and power steering fluid included).

If your going to do this and expect it to pay off, you have to do it right. Keep the car garaged and covered, a battery tender on it, and be sure the convertible top is soaked with a conditioner and UV-protectant. Rodent protect it, and inspect it regularly. Create a maintenance program and log what you've done, so you can hand it to the new owner (complete with all receipts referenced as well as notes you've made) some day. You might even contact Ford to see if you can get an original sales brochure.

Those are the things that will bring you the coin down the road. And yes, I've BTDT with a 1964 Mustang....it's a lot of work, but if you can keep at it, it might pay off!

Thanks for the comments Gents. The vehicle has been treated/maintained almost exactly as IsleVistaMan outlined, with the main exception being the oil was changed once a year. I maintain two 60's muscle cars of my own and find detailed records are very much worth the trouble. Best regards. John--Las Vegas.

Drive the car as it's meant to be driven. My lord why do people want to save the car for the next guy? I have more than my share of collector cars, my best example being a 1967 Corvette 427 that is immaculate and has 65,000 orig miles. I drive this car - but maintain and keep it clean. I have a friend that owns a really nice 57 vette and trailers it everywhere and, to me, never enjoys the car. As in investment, he may do well, but he will have never enjoyed the car. There are tons of 2000 Mustang GT's out there so you won't be seeing collector status anytime soon - but if you drive it and keep it pristine as it is (which can be done) you will eventually make out as many of these cars are already either ragged out or just plain abused, where your car is in like new shape.

To keep on the thread, though - I'd use Mobil 1, take it on a good trip once a month or so (to enjoy the car) and change the oil once a year. They are great cars - enjoy it!
