catastrophic lubrication failure, mobil 1

That engine is dirty. I love it when folks like this say....

"I can assure you that I change my oil quite frequently and check the levels often. I am very anal when it comes to the oil in my car"

I think his idea of "often enough" goes way beyond my own 8K OCIs using the regular M-1.

My own personal barometer with synthetics is still seeing a crystal clear dipstick at 1K of the OCI. If not, then I change that oil out much earlier than 8K. I would bet this engine showed a black oil dipstick at 1K of his most recent OCI.

From the guy with the engine:

I am going to be contacting Toyota about this as it seems to be a problem with the oiling system in the motor.

Yep ..sure looks like this guy screwed up with M1.

I doubt it was the oil or the filter, and i hope Toyota doesn't help him at all. I hate when people heavily, or even lightly modify their cars, and expect the company to solve their problems when something goes wrong like this. I'm not saying the turbo caused his problems, but im sure it didn't help.

The car was turboed and driven hard with stock internals.

This is not the oil's fault, this is someone turboeing an engine without beefing up the internals.

The oil is not the fault here, the owner is the problem.

To clarify, I didn't mean that it was Mobil 1 fault but that his choice of mobil 1 oil (and BTW, toyota calls for 5W30 only and 5000/7500 miles intervals) for this kind of driving was not very smart.

No sympathy for this so-called "homebuilt turbo guru" here but several things at fault:

(1) you don't casually throw in a turbocharger/supercharger/nitro in a stock engine without properly blueprinting the stock engine first (and make appropriate modifications such as oil pumps, forged rods, engine oil cooler, etc. and then go from there).

Many ricer kids do this a scrw up their stock engines in less than 3K miles simply because of that, and then they come posting away on the internet crying foul......

(2) you don't come blaming the oil or oil filter when you pretty much "wiped" out your bearings and the pictures of rods with rather grimy oil and varnished rod surfaces (I would "question" his "frequency" of OCI)....

(3) driving freakkin hard with scouring on the babbit surface (nowadays it's mostly alu alloy flash bearing coating instead of tri-metal in the past) indicates that the guy may have excessive "insolubles" in his oil, perhaps a foam air cleaner, prolonged OCI? wrong oil weight that caused "bypass" valve to kick in with dirt getting into the bearings, etc.

I concur with the rest of the gurus here.

Exactly!

Depending on the amount of boost the turbo got he needed to reduce compression ratio and beef up the bottom end for it to last especially driven the way he did. He got his just reward and now will pay for some big repairs. Hope other people will learn from his mistakes.

Remember the ads, "What a fun bunch of guys - Toyota!"

From the same toyotanation post...

"UH, wanna hear a nice one? My 11 year old has been doin well helping with oil changes and I thought was ready to solo last time we did it I just did a quick check on drain plug and filter torque he said I was good to go found out 368 miles later that he had put 1 quart of oil in to leave the level in the jug at the 4qt mark ARRRGGH
I never saw the oil light on, and had to drive another 150 with the level correct but not changed out."

They really are a fun bunch of guys....

Yeah, it doesn't make much sense to me to check the drain plug and the filter torque..........But not check the oil level after your 11 year old has finished doing an oil change..
