Hi.
Castrol SLX 0w30 and Castrol formula RS 0w-40
Both Ester+PAO blend oil? only different one w30 and other w40?
Both have almost same data pour point and flash point but am not sure, does any one know?
Thanks.

Here's my take:

Castrol RS 10w50 - Amber coloured. Smells typically hydrocarbon. Therefore my guess is that it's predominantly PAO.

BP Visco 7000 0w40 - Green coloured. My guess is this is the asian version of Castrol RS 0w40. Specs look pretty identical and the UOA additives look very similar to the Castrol RS 10w50. But the smell is totally different, very fragrant. My guess is that it has lots of esters.

Castrol SLX 0w30 - Green coloured but smells totally different from the BP Visco 7000. Smells exactly like Fuchs 0w20. And we all know that Fuchs 0w20 is 100% biodegradeable synthetic ester.

Conclusion: RS & SLX are totally different formulations.

Ken,
I've got some Castrol Formula R 0W-40, which is reputed to be Visco 7000. It's PDS has pretty much identical properties.

It's a typical oil brwon colour, but certainly doesn't smell like general dino, not like M1 0W-40

Don't bother looking for SLX in Australia, it is officially "finito" in this country, according to the Castrol Reps, and replaced by Formula R 0w40.

My local Autobarn just had 2 bottles of SJ SLX in stock (now gone), and I haven't seen any stock anywhere else.

Shannow - have you used the Formula R 0w40 yet ?

Hi guys.
Thanks for the replys.I think Castrol RS fromula 0w-40 not a ester base oil may be group3/PAO blend as Motul 8100 x-cess 5w-40.
Then again BMW LL-01 engine oils must have 30000km/2year change interval and chemical synthetic oil according to the BMW. You can see lot of group3 or group3/PAO oils got BMW LL-98 rated but not BMW LL-01 am I rite?
[Volkswagen 503.01 the same thing 30000km/2 year]
So far all the engine oils i have seen with BMW LL-01 standard were PAO/PAO+Ester engine oils.
This Castrol 0w-40 got the BMW LL-01 standard and Volkswagen 503.01 how come??
BMW LL-01 oils
Castrol SLX 0w-30.
Mobil1 0w-40
Castrol RS formula 0w-40???

There is another BMW engine oil standard 'BMW LL-01 FE' Designated base oil chemical synthetic oil HTHS over 3.0 and ACEA level A5/B1/B4.
'BMW LL-01' HTHS is OVER 3.5 and ACEA level A3/B3/B4.
BMW LL-98 designated base oil Not designated ACEA level A3/B3 HTHS OVER 3.5.

I don't think Formula R 0w40 is a Group 3. Castrol tech lines told me only the 5w30 is Group 3, 10w60 and 0w40 is PAO. The specs of 0w40 (-54 pour point) and the smell from what others have said, suggests it is full synth.

It better not be Group 3 for the price they charge for 0w40 ($80 for 5 litres)

Whoa.

Delvac 1 only costs me A$90.00 for 20 litres. It must be the best value full synthetic available in Oz.

Toyota18, contact Castrol on their tech line. They will try and answer as best they can.
I was only talking to them last week about some of their gear oils (SMX-O, Syntrans, etc) and confirmed they are fully imported, PAO/Ester blends. They can fax through the PDS's, as they can't email them.

Rick.

Losiho,
haven't used it yet (another 1500km to go this change).

Yep, it's supposed PAO, which is pretty well what the pour point suggests.

BTW, picked it up for $64.95/5l

Whoops !
That sould have been $183/20 litres (incl. GST)

Sorry.

Losiho, you have to go to a depot.
Our nearest one has it in 5l, 20l or 200l drums.
It's almost half the price I was paying three years ago. ($336/20l)
Then I was the only person buying it in a region stretching from Singleton to Moree, NSW.
Now they are turning over quite a bit of it, as well as the synthetic gear oils.

Rick.

Hi.
Does any one know Motul 300v range is 100% ester or More Ester and small amount of PAO blend?

I'm pretty sure it's all Ester. The 8100 0w40 was supposedly all Ester but has turned out to be a PAO / Ester mix (and there's nothing wrong with that).

Ok, update time. Autobarn is currently selling Formula R 0w40 for $65.99 for 5 litres. M1 SS 5w50 is $64.99. Although, they still have gold bottle M1 SS 10w30 for $80.99 a bottle !

Castrol SLX LL01 0W-30

Is the best oil in the whole world

later engine models LL04 must use
