My Scion xD takes 4.8 quarts of oil, apart from just being lazy it is kind of difficult to measure 4.8 quarts out of the jug. Would any harm come to the engine if I just went ahead and poured all 5 quarts of oil into the engine?

The best advice is to do what is recommended. That said people put an extra half quart or so in all the time. I really doubt the addition of less than 1/4 qt over recommended would hurt anything or even be out of the margin of error engineered into the motor capacity...

Just stay away from those 5.1 qt jugs.

Why do they even make those? I have nver heard of a vehicle holding 5.1 quarts of oil.

So that if your vehicle holds six qts you have to use almost all of an extra whole quart. That way you have a bottle you can't use for used oil disposal because it still has an .oz or two of good oil in it. These bottles sit on your shelf in the garage until you have seven or eight of them. Then you dump them all in your lawn mower... Not that I have ever had such an experience ...

So other retailers don't have to match Walmart's prices.

The difference amounts to 6.4 oz, or a cup and a half.
It is of absolutely no concern.

Check the dipstick after. If its miles over the MAX line I'd be worried.

But for what its worth no, up to a half a quart extra probably won't hurt anything.

No issues will occur from having another few ounces in the crankcase absolutely nothing to worry about.

But honestly why not just use the correct amount. Usually you can guestimate by pouring in getting to half fill line on the dipstick and then putting a few more ounces in at a time and checking the stick once again.

didn't we have this discussion 2weeks ago? and probably 2weeks before that, and 2weeks before that?

My post from that thread:

I used to think too, that exact fill level was very important.

Then I thought a bit more and brought in the real-world that my car actually moves. It goes up and down hills, brakes and accelerates, so whatever oil in there is splashing around basically all over the place, making a mockery of the precision draining and filling i was doing.

Rumors that the crank is going to hit the oil and foam it up things of that nature, suddenly don't seem to hold true if your realize your car is in motion and oil is getting squeezed to films and flung everywhere.

Same reason why there's a range of Add->Max on the stick, so weird crankcase volumes like 4.2quarts don't matter.

Everyone knows if you let the car sit the dipstick level goes back up a bit, so apply this same logic and a little overfull is fine too.

My understanding is that Wal Mart has exclusive agreements with major oil companies to be the only retailer offering 5 qt jugs.
