I have. My wife and I have already discussed it. If I can't land a decent job in my field (mechanical design) within the next 6 months, my wife and I are selling the house, moving the family into an apartment, and I'm going back to school full time. I want to become a Registered Nurse, and possibly a Nurse Practitioner (requires master's degree).

Actually, the master's degree for a Nurse Practitioner is going away. The new requirement will be a Doctorate of Nursing to be a Nurse Practitioner around 2015 I believe.

Here comes an even more expensive medical system.

One of my former boss almost hired a guy that has good qualification and reputation, then when the background check found out that he faked a graduation (drop out) of a degree that isn't that important (when you have 10 years of experience, the degree doesn't matter anymore in this field), he has to drop the guy off from the list because of company policy.

The scary thing is, 1/3 of the guys in our field didn't have a degree in our field, and this guy that we dropped is a top candidate. Lying doesn't pay.

I finally found a job. I start Monday. A lot less money than my last job. I feel anxious about it. A little nervous maybe. It's a crazy feeling.

What I found odd ..(well, not really) was how a company that would be begging for someone of marginal qualification in a good economy ...settling for what they can get and be happy about it, assume a downright upright demeanor in times like this.

People appear to enjoy the empowerment and exercise the newly found option of turning their nose upward.

Gary, that is nearly most employers, I saw the swing in Kansas city from 1999 to 2002, wow, that difference in the HR attitude.
needless to say that the most of the new hires (cream of the crop) stayed 11 to 18 months only!

I just find it funny how people can morph/mask their true nature when necessary ..and reveal it when possible. As though they were being "held back" from unleashing themselves upon others as they REALLY want to. It's just a curiously (dark) comical observation.

It has some in the closet dominatrix aspects to it.

About ten years ago I quit a job on very short notice (like 2 hours on my last day, no 2 week notice given) and my very surprised boss asked my why. I told him there was really nothing that I could accomplish there and I wanted to pursue other 'career interests'

When my boss asked if I would make more money at this new job...... I said yes, about $15,000 more. He offered to match the pay but I said thanks, but no thanks. Many people leave a job cause they are simply not happy there and need a change.

Was this when you were selling insurance?

Through some contacts from a previous job, I landed that mechanical design consulting position I mentioned in an earlier post in this thread. I will be earning considerably more money than in any job I've done prior to this one, AND I will get to do a large portion of the work from home. The guy that hired me said there was much more CAD work to be done if he likes my work on this first project. I am happy today!

One should expect their boss to keep their pay competitive, or something like this might go down.

I got a call from my former employer today, stating that they wanted to include me on a bid for some additional work on an existing defense contract. Fingers crossed that I get it. Things are getting a little tight without a steady income..

The trick is to reduce your economic footprint. My neighbor is a crane operator. Gets called for all the local nuke work since all the security paperwork is current. Gets calls for other stuff too, but cherry picks most of it. He lives very small. He's way over the mean for income here in our little post-industrial hamlet. So he banks LARGE and enjoys watching his kids growing up. He just keeps the toy list to chump change level ..at least as far as what he could have.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but ..as I think you can see, regardless of the peaks and valleys that are going to ebb and flow in the future, the overall picture will always ultimately be worse. It all depends on your time base of analysis.
