Billy and photography co-existed. Not many examples because it was prohibitedly expensive ... maybe Billy could afford it once or twice.

Glass plate covered in silver metal, other chemicals to develop, printed on paper full of more silver, not cheap.

There's a History Channel 2 hour special that talks about how it was determined that the photo was authentic. It's pretty fascinating.

Since no one alive ever confirmed he was in the photo (Pat Garrett confirmed the famous Billy The Kid photo was authentic when he was alive) we will never know for sure. But the evidence is pretty compelling.

Photo for wedding party maybe, so Billy didn't pay for it.
Got me convinced. I'm thinking 90% sure its real.

They found the site of the old building with some certainty.
They checked up with diary and stuff with Sallie Chisum's ancestors.
Dated the tin-type photo at around 1878.
Croquet was Tunstall's British sport, so explains that.
Established the subject was 5'8" which matches Billy.
Other Regulators in the frame, known associates.

Do you mean the Emilio Estevez "Young Guns"? I thought it was reasonable, who knows really.

I have an original wanted poster of Jesse James
that I got many years ago from an old Sheriffs office in Missouri
that was being torn down.
It's very dark with age and underneath it was some Packard drawings. It's not worth nearly anything like this but is real.

Its been in storage for decades.

The best research and investigation up to now says it is indeed Billy.

But...is it 100% certain? No...but about as close as you are going to get.

Do you think Billy's sweater is bulging around the waist because he has a pistol belt on underneath it?
Or did he just have a weird potbelly??

Very cool! Take a picture of it and post it here if you'd like to.
Thats got to be worth a few thousand at a western history auction maybe.

He shot everyone who made fun of his potbelly.

Frame it and put it on your wall. Thats what I would do anyway.

It looks like he's holding the grip of a revolver under his sweater and the muzzle tip is pointing towards his other hand. I might be wrong because it's been a long time since I read about old photography techniques, but IIRC, those photos were backwards, so he was actually holding the croquet mallet in his left hand and his right hand was under his sweater.

No, Chris, you will not be putting this on my wall. Hang it in your own den.

At least Billy is playing a respectable game. Imagine he was zipping down a Slip'N Slide!
