Biggest oil in your area?

In NYC, no matter where you go, wether it be a car wash, quick lube joint, parts store, Castrol is jammed down your throat, big time. Huge signs and oil change deals galore. I guess GTX is the bulk oil around here. Wonder why?

On a side note, seeing as how EDGE has such a big marketing jammy going on as of late, why no 5w-20? Especially with all the Honda/Fords around? I'd give it ashot for the heck of it.. Seems like they're losing money..

Here it seems to be Valvoline. It's the one I always see people buying or talking about. They also carry it at a majority of the dealerships/mechanics around here. I used to use it exclusively before joining this site, as did my family for generations.

5w-20 still makes up a very small portion of the market.

Around here, it's definitely Castrol GTX.

For some reason, Castrol has a reputation (at least around here) of being a "premium" product.

In our shop we stock GTX in bulk in the 3 popular weights. We also have bottled oils and some people request Castrol GTX over other same priced offerings such as Pennzoil yellow, Valvoline white, Quaker State, Mobil and Motorcraft. Some people are receptive in listening to suggestions on using better stuff, but other people are dead set and think they know what they are talking about.

In synthetics our Castrol and Mobil 1 are the same price. I try to suggest Mobil 1 5w30 or 5w20, but most people want the exact opposite of what I am offering because they think Im there to rip them off. So because I'm suggesting Mobil 1 they think Castrol Syntec must be better.

Around northern Virginia all the lube shops push this BG brand. Not so much for engine oil but grease, transmission oil, diff. oil etc. I have never heard of BG oil's and I have lived/been in many different areas.

Thats funny. Valvoline seems to be what all the garages use and Havoline is everywhere on the East coast. I couldnt find Kendal if my life depended on it over on this end.

I would say that the mid-west is valvoline followed by castrol or quaker state.

The dominant quicky lube places use pennz or Quaker State. The parts stores also seem to have more Pennzoil shelf space than the other dinos. For syn, it's mobil 1. With Wally's pricing it less than others ($22 here), people think it's a deal since it used to be more expensive. More shelf space than the others for sure. For HDEOs it's a toss up between Delo and Rotella. The rice grinder kids all seem to use Castrol.
