What is currently the best filter in the $3 range ? Best in terms of construction quality, function (adbv, bypass) and efficiency (filtration).

I think there are a few that stand out to me in the 3 dollar range:

1) Ford motocraft filters at Wal Mart or Farm and Fleet stores
2) Supertech filters at Wal Mart (although I think BITOG has lost some love for these for some reason)
3) Purolator Premium's I think are around 3.50ish.
4) Some speak well of the Advanced Auto house oil filters.

I think all of these are nitrile with the exception being some of the Motorcraft filters that do have the silicone if they end with an (S) on the end of their name.

I know I am probably leaving some out of the mix, but I would use any of these without hesitation in reasonable OCI terms.

You can get AC, Motorcraft, and MOPAR filters( limited applications )at the local Auto Zone for $3.50-$3.99. Wal-Mart here just recently started carrying the same 3 filters. I saw $3.25-$3.75 for pricing. Eveything else around here that is any good will run you $4.50+.

The SuperTech is a great sub-$3 filter but right now my favorites are the Napa ProSelect(sub-$3)and Nascar filters ($3.50) which are extremely well made as well.

The MC is pretty good at it's price. ST is still a value, but less so as it approaches the rebadged Purolator.

My personal favorites:
Advance Auto Total Grip
Napa ProSelect (depends on application, some are more than $3)
SuperTech
ProLine
Purolator Premium Plus

AC Delco filters seem to be about at that price point and are good filters. Wix might be about the same price in some iteration as a Napa filter and get good reviews.

Though wal-mart filters seem to get good reviews, they are one of the two brands (fram being the other) that have caused start up knock when testing different filters on my truck.

WalMart being the Champion Labs SuperTech filter? I wonder if a Bosch or STP would cause the same noise.

Yep. I posted several pictures of a dismantled ProSelect several months ago. I'll try to drudge up a link to that thread and post it. Stay tuned....
