I installed a Orielly Microguard on my Sierra two days ago with NAPA 5-30. This is the fram version and now I experience rattling when the truck sits overnight.

This is the first fram I have used in a long long time?

Will this damage my engine over a 4-5k oci?

Oil pressure is great, same as when I use any other filter.

If I were you, I would go out and take the O' Reilly Microgard filter off immediately and change it to something of a better quality. The reason you are hearing the rattling at start up is because the filter is not letting oil sit on top of the engine, therefore not providing critical protection during cold start ups. The motor oil you are using is fine and is made by Ashland who also makes the great Valvoline Motor Oil. Oil filters I recommend are Purolator, Bosch, Wix, Mobil 1, etc...

I had the same problem with a orange Fram that Wal-Mart installed on my Monte Carlo. Shortly after, I started changing my own oil.

Swap the filter out with something that isn't a low-end Fram, and watch the problem disappear. You're also going to lose a half a quart of oil as well. You can thank Fram for that as well.

Have you noticed this problem while using any other brand of oil filter? Likely the answer is "no".

And yet, a few individuals around here still hang on to the notion that there's nothing wrong with the design of low-end Fram oil filters... Remember that when you're back underneath the truck swapping out the oil filter.

This is the failing of just about any nitrile ADBV filter. Most are quiet until somewhere around 3k-4k. It's just annoying. Those who never experience it regardless of filter choice have an engine/orientation that prohibits the filter emptying.

It's not an issue of merit. If it were anything worth bothering with, there would be some prohibition on their use.

Change it ..don't change it.

Nope never had this problem with ST, NAPA Silver/Gold, AcDelco (ecore or classic,) or purolator classic.

Reason I went with this filter was I got a good deal, I'll have to hunt my wal-marts near me for the ST3980 or PF52s at a good price since mine stopped carrying them.

Thanks guys.

I'll toss one of the NAPA proselects on it that has been in my garage for a couple of years now.

But my oil filter is mounted vertically? how could the oil escape?

I had this issue with one Purolator filter. Swap out the filter with a different one and the noise went away. It's probably just a bad filter.

I'll get to it tommorow and return it to Kragen. I'll keep posted if the proselect solves the problem.

It's the new "black can" construction. It's called construction to the lowest common denominator, which just also happens to be the lowest bidder for the Microgard.

That said, some vehicles are more sensitive to marginal adbv's. Though, one wouldn't think it would be a large issue on a verticle mount (base up). Never had an issue with a Purolator nitrile product like Classic a Puro made AAP Total Grip.

I put in a Proselect that was half the size and the rattle went away.

I'll probably end up stocking on STP filters, wish they had a sale with the filter alone.

first fram in over 3 years on this truck and it caused me issues lol.

First time I used a Fram on My VW Golf....at cold start up tapping...then after a minute or so to warm up tapping gone...I remove the Fram orange can and install a Mahle OC 47 and viola tapping gone forever. Coincidence....absolutely NOT!

possibly the anti-Fram cult can explain why the 83 Cutlass 307 I ran for 18 years and 256K on nothing but Fram orange can and Castrol 10-40 never used 1 quart in the entire 18 years of its existence---------vehicle was retired due to the trans.
