Is the coolant level supposed to be super low (non-existent) in the big coolant tank and at max level in the small one?
B58 low coolant (hardly any) in the main reservoir.

The 540 I take it? Top it off and keep an eye on it. Coolant does not always stay the same level for ever

Answer: No. Fill to Max line and start checking for white residue around coolant connections and more importantly the water pump.

Ya it's a feature of the B-series engines.
My experience is that the cooling system for these cars with the B58 is very robust. Yes, lots of plastic. I've tracked my car in the middle of Virginia summer and the oil temp gauge (there's no coolant temp gauge) remained rock steady at about 235*F.
Top it off and run it for a couple of weeks. If it's low again take the car to a reputable shop that specializes in bimmers. www.bimrs.org is the place to start. Also, check the website of the Windy City chapter of the BMWCCA.
