Plastic of course. Just a lot _less_ plastic than in a drum or bottle. Bugger all strength required against the cardboard and the box is recyclable.

I have an idea -- how about selling oil in cans made of paper and metal? The paper is incinerable, and the metal is recyclable.

raskies for oil...yeah, I saw them recently.

Not sure how easily I can get my oil back into them for recycling like I can bottles, but a few 20L drums and I'm golden.

Note to US based peeps.

A "Raskie" is the silver bladder out of casked wine. It's easier for the nuff-nuffs to carry them around, and they can be managed like a traditional wineskin...when empty, blow them up and there's your pillow for the night.

They are also referred to as a "goonbag"

"Goon bags" can be used for "Goonbag of fortune" where Raskies are tied varioualy to the rotary clothes line, everyone stands around it, and someone gives it a good spin...if one lands in front of you, you have to chug.

(and no, those products weren't part of my uni days...)

I know they have been doing this in the US for a while, but as far as I know, it is not a retail level item, just something for the oil change places.
Thing is, current oil bottles are already able to be recycled, aren't they? I know I throw mine in the recycle bin.

You mean like this?

Yes, just like that.

Where are they selling them?

Maybe even make them out of all metal cans!

You can get Shell EcoBoxes sort of at retail, depending upon the place you buy stuff. Ironically, that is sometimes the most sensible size for some of their more hard to get products.

#2 HPDE plastic recycling

New motor oil bottles are #2 recyclable and made into other plastics such as: motor oil containers, floor tile, drainage pipes, laundry detergent bottles, benchs, dog houses, picnic tables, fencing, etc. Motor oil containers themselves are a very tiny fraction of the entire solid waste stream.

MSW waste stream break downs

Plastics make up 12.7% of the typical USA waste stream. I would imagine motor oil plastic waste containers would be considerably
Just checked my local town lists.....they don't want the motor oil containers. They might be concerned someone filled them with dirty oil at some point. Oh well. In the trash they stay. So the internal plastic bladder in the original post wouldn't be recyclable either.

A plastic jug in a cardboard box. What an innovation!

In the US, the 55 gallon drum in the shop is filled by the oil truck pump. No jug. No box. No waste.

I can't see anyone here making a special effort to recycle the bladder in some special place, it'll just go into the household rubbish. No matter how clean I make my plastic oil bottles, they are still in the recycle bin when I get home.
