SO I finally got my license, and will be visiting the local store for a look around tomorrow. To start with i am going to get a lever-gun, to do some target shooting, including lever action silhouette.

The Browning BL-22 and Marlin 39-A both go for around $1k here, and Henry base model $750. Henry Octagon around $850.

Do any of the more experienced hands have any recommendations? I am not sure if I like the really short throw, I have only shot a 39A and really enjoyed it.

Marlin availability is real bad at the moment, BL-22 in stock, and Henry's 2 weeks or so away. The henry lead time is not so bad as I have a 28 day wait for my permit to acquire in any case, and they can run concurrently, but would be buying sight unseen unless I wait for it to come in first.

crinkles, I thought the new Fatty O'Barrel rule changes meant that the PTA needed the particular rifle and serial number on it, rather than the old open order ones.

Yup they can fill it in at the gunshop for the specific rifle I believe. (and hold the rifle for you). anyway - will know more RE the practicalities tomorrow when I go in for a chat. I hope the police website is up to date!

Or, you can send of to the registry, get papers back, have gunshop fill back in with serial #, sit back and wait.

I suspect that they may get the details off of the other dealer or the importer beforehand?

Can you buy used? Winchester 9422 or 9422XTR would be my recommendation. Super smooth action, never missfeeds. Sold for many years in the USA. Probably a bunch destroyed in Aus, which would be serious travesty, just a nasty political game.

+1 I have a 9422M - the .22 Magnum version and I love it.

Is there a reason for a lever gun, over a bolt, or pump action gun?

I own a number of enjoyable 22's. While they are all fun, by far, my favorite is a Mossberg LSB, 26 inch heavy barrel, bolt action.

It's stunningly accurate, more so than any of the others. It's also very quiet with the 60 grain SSS Aguila rounds (super subsonic rounds) What impresses me most about the LSB is it's accuracy with all forms of ammo.

Sorry for heading off topic a bit.

Anyway, I'm a stickler for properly machined parts and I feel the Henry lever action has crudely made sights. Although, the action seems to work perfectly and is very smooth. Other than the sights, it's a nice little rifle.

I thought the Marlins at the local fun shop "appeared" to be machined to a tighter standard. (remember, this means nothing, other than external appearance)

I own the Henry leveraction .22lr, I've had it for about 5 years now. It's been an excellent rifle. I put a scope on it about 3 years ago, very accurate. I'm seriously thinking of getting the Henry in .22mag as well. Love the lever actions as they stay SO MUCH cleaner than the semi-autos, plus the capacity of the tube vs. a standard magazine. Also being able to shoot .22 shorts is great too.

I think you'd be OK with any of them.

The BL-22 is a very nice lever gun. A friend got one for our new little boy as his first gun. Of course it will be quite a few yeas before he can shoot it - I hope I can keep my hands off it for that length of time.

The Henry's are also nice; I haven't noticed the sight issue on the ones I've seen. perhaps I've not looked at them close enough.

I have a new Marlin (RemLin) Guide Gun in 45-70. Based on my experience with this gun, I would be comfortable with a new Marlin .22.

You didn't mention it, and it may not be available there, but the Smith & Wesson M & P 15-22 .22LR is an absolute hoot to shoot. It's hard to get people to put it down. Just saying.

I'd only buy a Winchester lever action.

I'd only be shooting if for nostalgia anyway. Winchester made the most famous lever guns.

There is very little advantage to them over a semi-auto, so it would just be for fun-factor anyway.

Normally I'd say Marlin. But it sounds like you aren't going to get a chance to look it over before buying. I wouldn't recommend that unless it was an older one.

Cowboy Action is one of Oz's biggest growing sports...

I own a Henry Golden Boy .22 Lever gun. No problems with function or build. Good smooth action that feels better the faster you cycle it. I use candy tubes as a speed loader of sorts. The only con to this one for me, is that it feels like a toy or BB gun. I much rather use my Remmington 597 semi-auto, though the action is less reliable than the Henry.

And who designed the Winchester lever action rifle? It was none other than Benjamin Henry!

That's interesting. I always think of Henry rifles as heavy beasts, not toy guns.

As for the 1894, I the JMB designed that.

Anyways as I stated the Win variant is super slick. It reminds me of some Marlin variants that have been slicked up.

Now I wan't a Winchester lever gun in .22.

And a leather saddle holster for it too.

Guess I'd have to buy a horse.

Then a cowboy hat, boots, gloves.

And chewing tobacco.

Hmmmm...
