I'm helping my son with his girl friend's car. Since I am only a Toyota/Honda guy, I have no idea what antifreeze a '01 Jeep Cherokee calls for. There is no owner's manual to be found. Suggestions?

Either old school American green, or Zerex G-05 (also sold as Motorcraft Gold and in a reddish form by Chrysler) will be fine. If you're not sure what was in there before, make sure to flush it out well.

Is Zerex G-05 the "same" as the Mopar 5 yr/100000 mile stuff?

I'm confused. The door panel says date of manufacture is 10/00. The owner says it is a '01. What is it? How can I tell?

That will be a 2001. If I recall correctly, a model qualifies for, say, model year 2001 is long as it's either shipped or produced (I forget which) over the new year beginning 2001. That's why we will see 2012 cars before 2011 is done.

When we see model half years, like the 1999.5 SVT Lightning I used to have, it's a half model year because it wasn't shipped or produced over any new year period.

Look at the emissions sticker under the hood, it's usually on the fan shroud or the upper radiator support.

New cars bearing the next year's model designation are introduced in dealer showrooms in about September. It has been that way as long as I can remember, but I've never known why. Maybe it is so they can have those end-of-model-year clearance sales before the calendar year actually ends?

Thanks, It's a 2001

This also means that, had there been any updates, options, styling changes for '01, your vehicle has it.

I bought my 04 Nissan Altima(02-06 design) in March '04 but, right next to it was the new(very early) '05 models with some interior, grill, head lights/tail lights, tire size changes and too many other things to mention. But it was the same car. Some features you could see and others you couldn't. Not a major redesign as in '07 but some tweeking!

10/00 is DEEP into the 2001 model year production run. Its an 01.

Apart from that, the emissions tag under the hood should reveal the model year.

Apart from that.... there's no significant difference between an 00 and 01 Cherokee anyway :-)

And to the original question- Either conventional inorganic or G-05 will work just fine- although the Cherokee never came with G-05, the 4.0L I6 got it the next year in the Wrangler. My '99 is running G-05, the 01 is still running conventional inorganic (until the next flush/fill anyway).

The 4.0 would *probably* even survive on a DexClone (ie, Prestone "all makes") but I wouldn't do it. The head gasket *might* be incompatible- not likely, but possibly.

I've seen 4.0s survive on dexclones without damage, but I wouldn't do it. If the system isn't totally clean when you swap, it'll sludge beyond belief, particularly with the non-pressurized overflow bottle.

My mom's 99 WJ had green originally, but had been topped off with dexclones. I flushed it a few weeks ago when she complained that her heat wasn't working. The coolant came out with a ton of sludge, and a totally blocked heater core. I've never seen a cooling system that gross. No actual damage though.

I just went to dealership and got the Mopar 5/100,000 stuff for $18/gallon. 2001 is the "crossover" year for both antifreeze and the coil packs. Now for some NGK plugs and I'll have her Jeep kicking.

And you can dye Zerex (or Motorcraft) gold G-05 pretty much the same red color with food coloring (see the thread "a little experiment." Still bright red after over a month, looks like its permanent. Oh and in that thread I quoted an ounce red coloring per 2 gallons of mix... I went back and looked at the package and each food coloring container is acutally 1/4 ounce (not a 1 ounce) and I used one container per 2 gallons of mix.
