I was wondering if 0-30 oil is good for any car and truck that requires a 5-30 or a 10-30 weight oil then why do oil company's like Amsoil even bother to make a 5-30 or 10-30?

SSO is fairly expensive, and some people just can't wrap their heads around using a 0w-30 where a 5w30 or 10w-30 is specified. I'd imagine that plays into things a bit.

5-30 and 10-30 are cheaper to make, using less sophisticated chemistry and additives than 0-30. Also, some vehicles really work best on 5- or 10-30.

Explain.

5WX and 10WX can be made from crud (Gp II or Gp III) oil. 0w takes more expensive Gp IV or Gp V synthetic base stock to produce.

I thought all of Amsoil's full synthetic line used Group IV base, including the 5W30 and 10W30 stuff.
The XL line is like Mobil 1 and uses some Group III.

Do you know something about Amsoil's blending that we don't?

Good stuff but designed to a real long oil drain interval. Different application for a different paradigm than most folks are used to and most warranties allow oci-wise..

Kaboomba said, “5-30 and 10-30 are cheaper to make, using less sophisticated chemistry and additives than 0-30. Also, some vehicles really work best on 5- or 10-30.”

I did not say that Amsoil 5W or 10W non XL line of oils were not what Amsoil says they are.

I don't believe the "Also, some vehicles really work best on 5- or 10-30" part.

Being closer to & reaching the proper viscosity sooner is bad how?

+1 It is not bad, IMO it is a very good thing. The only down side according to people I chatted with at Amsoil, Mobil, and Pennzoil about using a 0W-xx oil arises in an older engine that leaks. The 0W-xx oils according to the reps I chatted with would be more prone to leak. In a car that has no leaks a 0W-xx oil is the better choice in just about every application. The only real downside is cost, and the fact that it is only available in Synthetic. That is a problem only if you are a diehard dino user.

I have used it in engines recommending 5W and 10W with great results. However, in at least two the 10 W is my choice due to less engine noise and cost. Depends on situation for me. Cost is becoming a huge factor when I can get 6 quarts of shell full synthetic at BJs on sale for $18 versus $40 for 0W30 at dealer cost at my local warehouse. Yea, I would not go 10,000 miles on the Shell but I rarely drive any car 10,000 miles a year anymore anyway. With gas prices going up and the future looks bad for prices driving a car is becoming a true luxury

Cost is a big factor, especially for many of us with older cars. For us under the conditions you stated that $18 full Synthetic vs the $40 Synthetic you mentioned is the way to go.
